VHII neck vs Emerald neck?
« on: March 15, 2013, 10:29:33 AM »
Well as the title says, I would like to get some opinions on which pickup to with, I've chosen the Emerald bridge and Tim says i should choose between the two, but I am not too familiar with them, so i hoped somebody could give me a point of direction

I play a style that reminds of the two last tracks on here http://plini.bandcamp.com/ dunno what to call it

Anywho I hope somebody can help!

I'm wondering about these two pickups as well to go in the neck of my Les Paul. Let's see some insight from the all knowing members!

This is tricky because I own an Emerald neck but I've never used a VHII neck so it will be impossible to accurately compare. These were the two pickups I was thinking about when I made my purchase once I'd decided I didn't want another Cold Sweat. I listened to about every sound sample available on this forum and while I liked them both, it was the Emerald that really stood out. The VHII just sounded a bit 'ordinary' in comparison to what I heard in the Emerald, which really did sing in every clip. I've never regretted my decision at all. I have mine in a PRS SE Custom 24 and I'm guessing you're using a Les Paul of some description and I can only imagine it will sound even better in a guitar like that. It's just a tad bright in mine but nothing that can't be controlled and it responds very well to the tone control. Here's the review I wrote:

Great review! It has really made me lean towards the Emerald. Now to find a bridge pickup for the Les Paul to pair well with an Emerald neck.

I would instinctively say Holydiver because that's what I use with my Emerald and it's a combination that really will cover a very wide range of styles. If you wanted something a bit tighter and brighter in a Les Paul with a slightly more open feel to it, I'd look at a Cold Sweat for the bridge. That will give you bridge tones from good Classic Rock to at least 80s Metal.
