Nailbombs, Miracle Mans!?
« on: March 02, 2006, 02:34:52 AM »
Alright guys. Let's see if you can help. I am an owner of a beautiful mahogany bodied Schecter C-1 Classic that has absolutely wretched distortion tones with it's "jazzy" pickups (a set of SD Jazz/JBs) running through a mean DSL 100 and 1960 4x12. I have an LTD MH-301 with EMG 81/60 combo which sounds SO MUCH better through my DSL.
I WAS leaning toward EMGs until I heard all the noise about what these UK guys are doing over here at BKP...So, I'm a huge fan of Metallica, Steve Vai, Dream Theater, Satriani...basically those guys with GREAT all around tones. I want to have a really smooth, thick clean tone coupled with a very heavy, cutting distorted tone that is characteristic of those guys. So what's the best for my axe???

here's a rough divide:

Nailbomb, Ol' Skool, lotsa mids

Miracle Man, Nu Skool, smoother mids
slow music for slow people

I'm still stunned at the amount of gain I got through the Miracle Man pickups. My amp isn't high-gain, but the amount of distortion is fantastic.

I've also got Nailbombs that do distort nicely but they also have a very nice clean sound.  It's too early for me to be able to give you a decent comparison since I only got the Miracle Man pickups (and the guitar with them in) yesterday.

i thought miracle men were still kind of old-school, in an 80's metal kind of way- aren't warpigs the most modern sounding ones?

What would be the best for a Petrucci-style smooth distorted tone???

It's close on the two you talk about, but if cleans are important lean to he Nailbomb.

The Miracle Man does a good Petrucci lead tone, but for Vai and Satch tones I'd be wanting the more aggressive mids of the Nailbomb. Check out the clips in the players room and you'll get an idea of the tonal difference.

Ditto.........Miracle Man has an extremely articulate lead tone, great if you're the only guitar player in the band whereas the Nailbomb has a thicker mid more suited to twin guitar attack........every time I play NBs I always think of that classic full Satch tone.

Whoa, whoa....if I'm the only guitarist, wouldn't it be a good idea to get Nailbombs because i would be responssible for cleans??? I would think so.

What Tim Means is the Miracle Man distorted has a huge sound, really fills up the soundstage with powerful low mids and bass, real balls. Cleans are OK, especially both pickups together sound good.

On the other hand the clean from a Nailbombs are sweeter  but the distortion tone doesn't have as tight a bass or as much low mid - depends what's most important to you!

I have a Marshall DSL 100. The thing kicks. What would be the better fit with that amplifier and a Schecter C-1 classic? I have a guitar with EMG 81's and the cleans sound better than okay at bridge pos. so should I get the MM's?

If you like the EMG 81 then the Miracle Man is a good alternative.

I'm kinda short on cash and I think I'm gonna take the Miracle Mans...so, anyways, would it be a good idea to keep the Duncan Jazz in the neck and just get the bridge version of the MM?

If you could stretch to it , I think most of us would say get a calibrated set.
