what length pots for LP?

Hi all,

My Les Paul is from '91, its got the metal plate that everything attaches to, however I want to wire it old school with the pots directly into the wood. 

Its currently got long-shaft pots, but if I take away the metal plate, will short-shaft pots be needed? - seems that the long ones would be TOO long without the metal plate they're mounted to. 

Any advice from those in the know appreciated.

There's usually a second nut you can use to set the height of the longer pots if you don't mind them sticking out in the cavity.

Pretty sure short shaft pots won't work unless there are recesses round the holes like on historic models.

experience says that you'll still need long shaft - especially for neck volume
As already said the second nut and washers are the secret

I've had work done by Paul before and played his guitars, can't argue with his work like - top drawer.
