I also think the original thought in the original post (i.e. "good solos on pop records") might be a better idea than just rock songs which happened to make it into the top 40. apart from anything else, there are so many of the rock ones that it might as well be a "best solo" thread, lol.

I agree 100%.  We are definitely leaning towards "rock songs which happened to make it into the Top 40".... but it's really difficult to resist doing that!

One that occurred to me randomly while watching Richard Thompson on BBC4 last night (I don't think there's a connection).... whatever you do, don't watch the video on YouTube, it's embarrassingly and horrifyingly dated, but it does have a cool guitar solo:

Mike Oldfield - Moonlight Shadow

wasn't mike oldfield 'tubular bells' a no1 album? that definitely wouldn't happen today...

Another one I can think of is Aerosmith, especially some of their ballads.

Don't particularly care for the solos on the ballads, other than What It Takes.

Yeah, lots of rock/prog albums got to number 1 in those days.  The album charts were completely different from the singles charts.

Yep, of course. Plus I mean there's some overlap anyway- you could definitely argue that chesney hawkes is rock, for example (maybe even beat it).

You could TRY to argue that Chesney Hawkes is rock, but you would be very, very wrong!

I tell you what, it makes me feel good about my playing for once.

I can't be bothered to search, but I'm sure there's a clip of Rihanna doing something very similar.  And didn't Madonna start playing an occasional Les Paul on stage a few years back?  I've no idea how well she plays.

You're correct about Madonna, and she still does play. Check out the Rig Rundown of her guitarist Monte Pittman, I think they talk about that a bit in there.
