Going a full circle; Nailbomb -> Holydiver -> Nailbomb

The guitar is this one, acquired august 2009:

Nailbomb was the first bridge pickup that was on this guitar. It always had this great bottom, but also a bright edge on the top that started to irritate me after a while. It was always there.

So I dropped in the Holydiver; still aggressive, but also great weight in the midrange and a wonderful lead tone. I was a happy camper for a long while.

Enter this day: the guitar has been played a few years, and I've started to feel that the guitar puts out TOO much midrange with its Holydiver. I recently put a Black dog in the bridge of an LP and that guitar just sounded better; big and thick, with both bottom and a top bite. A balanced, big LP.

What has happened during that time? The guitar has been played a lot. At home, at rehearsals and at stage. It's top end has mellowed down, and it's a very balanced, clear sounding instrument right now. I feel like the midrange comes forward more because the tone has freed up. You can hear this acoustically.

So I put the Nailbomb back in. Low and behold, it sounds great now! Bigger bottom than the Holydiver, still great mids (but without honk!), and an aggressive top. But the edge that once irritated me, is gone. It's not harsh, just a big and aggressive strat with great versatility. And sounds different from my other guitars too, which is nice. I don't see myself changing the Nailbomb  out of this guitar, unless I want a lower output humbucker there. I've fallen for those recently :)

I had great fun playing things like this with the guitar (Lynch is great and this one has a kick ass lead!):

As I now have the HD lying free, I would really like to try it in a guitar with a big bottom end. HD has a compact bass, so it would keep the bottom tight, while giving that singing big midrange to the guitar. I imagine it would sound absolutely huge 8)

I am about to do a similar change to test a HSH combination with my strat which currently has the Holydiver in the bridge. The pickguard will be set up with an A-Bomb in the bridge which will possibly be changed back to the Holydiver if I prefer the HSH set up to HSS.

Cheers Stephan

Unfortunately, my means of recording are poor at the moment :)

Now that you brought it up, I actually should do something about it. I do have mics, but don't have the software and soundcard. I used to have when I still had a desktop computer.

darkbluemurder, let us know how the experiment works out for you!

This is very weird.I thought every today`s musician have some basic setup for recording.I`m mean it`s 2013,you can get even for 70$ M-Audio 2496 I think and it will works very good for purposse of basic recordings.
Well ok,nothing then.Cheers.  :)

Borderline embarrassing it is :D I hate setting up mics in my apartment, although I have done that too. I don't have a small modeller anymore, but that was great for those spur of the moment things. I need something that I can just leavstill and just power up and press record when I want to.

Suggestions welcome, actually.

If you want silent recording, you do not need mics, and cabintes at all, just put you Amp head output into di box,and after that directly into any pro budget music card. And you can get freeware VST and load Impulse response cabinets.
You can use Le Pou Lecab: http://lepouplugins.blogspot.com/
and IR cabinets to load into it you can download from here:
http://www.guitarampmodeling.com/viewtopic.php?f=32&t=2631
or here just enter email and name:
http://www.redwirez.com/free1960g12m25s.jsp

Load up everything  freeware DAW : Reaper
http://www.reaper.fm/

Just wait 5 second and it works fully without any license.

An you are ready to record,When you set up everything you can always make save when you can just with one click load everything and start recording.

Hope it helps.
