Sheraton neck to match mini-humbucker
« on: March 28, 2013, 12:31:51 PM »
Hi.

I recently bought a mini humbucker for the bridge in my Epi Sheraton. The pickup is 6.7k and I got it from catswhickers pickups. I like that brighter, slightly more "tele" sound.

I want to replace the neck pickup too, but I never see humbuckers with similar resistance - would a 7.3k neck pickup (Mule) match it volume-wise? Or would it be louder? I'd like them to be similar volumes, obviously with a bit of an increase on the neck.

I could get a mini-bucker for the neck, but I quite like the stock Epi pickup, I just know that a "better" one will sound even better!

Thanks
Dan

Mini-humbuckers are pretty low-output (or to be more relevant, low-volume) pickups.  I've never tried it, but I suspect just about any humbucker in the neck position would overpower a mini-humbucker in the bridge.

A humbucker in the bridge and a mini in the neck is fine, of course, but no good to you.

I'm a bit confused, though, what were the original pickups, a pair of full-size humbuckers?  Did you use some kind of adaptor ring to fit the new bridge pickup?
BKPs I've Got:  RR, BKP-91, ITs, VHII, CS set, Emeralds
BKPs I Had:  RY+Abraxas, Crawlers, BD+SM

Hi

I haven't actually fitted the mini-hum yet, but I will make an adapter much like this:

Looks like'll need to get a mini-hum for the neck too then...or get a humbucker custom wound to match it?

Hi.

I recently bought a mini humbucker for the bridge in my Epi Sheraton. The pickup is 6.7k and I got it from catswhickers pickups. I like that brighter, slightly more "tele" sound.

DC resistance is only relevant for similar wire gauge, magnet type and size etc. The Crawler bridge and Abomb bridge have very close DC resistance (resp. 15.4 and 15.7k, both AV), and so it is for the Crawler neck and Mule neck (resp. 7.6 and 7.3K, both AIV), and yet the Crawler bridge and neck are perfecty mathec wrt/ output level while the ABomb bridge definitly overpowers the Mule neck.  To make a long story short: while you indeed want a rather low output neck (IOW something in the vintage range) to match your mini-hb bridge, don't pay too much attention to DC rating.

Mini-humbuckers are pretty low-output (or to be more relevant, low-volume) pickups.

The mini-hbs in my Epi Wilshire RI (budget guitar yet a real bargain FWIW) are not shy. Nothing like the ABomb for sure but they still pack some punch and power, way enough to get some very decent overdrive.
Have: Crawlers, BGF 50/52s, Mules, ABomb, RiffRaff
Had : Slowhands (n&m), Trilogy (b)
