Need advices to choose pickups
« on: April 21, 2013, 10:42:07 AM »
Hi,
I want to change pickups (EMG 707) from two guitars : one Schecter Loomis (ash body / mapple fretboard) and one Jackson Slatxmg3-7 (basswood body / rosewood fingerboard). I use Engl Blackmore or Marshall JVM410JS with Engl 4x12 (V30).
I play some stuffs like : Feared, Meshuggah, ... but i also like play some clean stuffs.
My tuning is a down tuning : drop E (like a 8 strings without high E).
I think to put Aftermath in the Schecter and Painkiller in the Jackson. Is it a good choice ?
Thanks
PS : I'm french and i try to learn English... I hope that my message will be understandable  :)

Not too much experience with the Aftermath since I played it only in one guitar so far, but I own a Painkiller. The pickup is quite frankly very high mid heavy and can get harsh if you don't tame your amp's settings, but sounds great for metal and should be awesome for everything downtuned. I use it in a 24.75 Scale Jackson tuned to E-Standard Flat and it still sounds great, but the guitar is rather darker voiced since it has a mahogany body and a rosewood fretboard. I guess your Jackson should take it well. An Aftermath in the Loomis might be a bit too bright due to the ash/maple combination. Maybe someone else chimes in.

Cheers

Thanks for your reply.
For the Jackson, the best choice is Painkiller or Aftermath ? The difference between this 2 pickups is just a boost in high mids for the Painkiller ?
For Schecter, i read in this forum that the Nailbomb will be a good choice.

I think both pickups will perform well, the only difference being that the Painkiller in deed has a higher mid peak compared to the Aftermaths center mids. They are both tight, clear and can give you a Meshuggah-like sound without a problem. I've chosen the Painkiller over the Aftermath since I found the trademark "quack" it seemed to have in every video a bit annoying.

No experiences with the Nailbomb, but it should perform well in the Loomis in deed.

When in doubt, just e-mail the BKP team. They know their products the best :)

Good luck and cheers

Thank you GuitarIv.
The BKP Team's response :
"I think the Nailbomb ceramic is a great choice for you Schecter and for the Jackson I highly recommend either Aftermath humbuckers".
I will command these pickups  :D

Great! Have fun with the pickups, you will love the difference of the sound compared to the EMGs. Just be sure to get new pots since Bareknuckles are passive and EMGs are active. Or get the guitars to a guitar tech so he can switch the PUs for you :)

And post some clips if you can haha ^^

Cheers
