Pickup recommendation for maple guitar
« on: April 21, 2013, 09:40:26 PM »
Right, so the Gibson Melody Makers were on sale in my local shop and at roughly £200 they had finally reached the no-brainer range, so I got an SG. The pickup that's in it (a Gibson 491T - some say it's a Duncan Designed SH-6 Distoriton, but I'm not sure, ceramic anyway) isn't actually as bright or bad as I thought it would be, but it's still gonna go, because hey, I just got an American made guitar for virtually no money at all, so I've got some cash to spend on a boutique pickup.

I'm gonna use this guitar mostly for drone/doom/stoner/sludge/witches-and-weed metal, and it's only got a bridge pickup so I suppose I'll need something rather dark. At the same time though I don't think a super hot pickup is the way to go as I'll not be driving any tube amps with it, just a couple of fuzz pedals for the dirt.

I think the Stockholm is in the lead right now as I don't have a P90 in any other guitar and certainly would like to try one out. (And of course Iommi used overwound P90s in his SG for a lot of the '70s Sabbath stuff, and I'm not quite past the fanboy stage yet.) But what about the output? How loud is it compared to, say, a regular P.A.F.?

Any other recommendations? Is the Warpig completely out due to its hotness, or is the 22-ish k rating not representative?

And what about the Abraxas? The mids/highs balance seems great, but is the bass too tight to do the trick in a maple body/maple fretboard axe?

And last but not least - does the Supermassive P90 come in a humbucker format, and if so at what price?

Apologies for possibly cr@p English, I'm from Sweden.

A lot of questions, but the Stockholm could be quite good in that guitar and it's great for heavier styles. It's a hotter version of the Supermassive, but I don't know if that will noticable that much in a direct comparison. BKP does not produce the Supermassive in hb-size. I guess it would be too close to the Stockholm.

You don't want the Abraxas (hotrodded warmer PAF) for the music you play. Perhaps a Warpig.

The traditional wisdom I've read on hear is that an SG needs to have pickups that are either very hot or vintage but not anything inbetween. Certainly my first thought was a Warpig for what you're after.

I doubt the warpig is any hotter than the stockholm

it's no near as hot as a 500t, x2n, invader or even a super distortion

it's all about the voicing and texture
it has a very fat tone with a warm and organic midrange grind
more what I would call "all-frequency heavy" pickup, which gives a false impression of big output, but it won't oversature anything like the other brands pickups I mentioned

I confess I'm surprised at that. I'd have thought it would be at least as hot as an Invader and hotter than a Super Distortion. Is your assessment based on the A-Pig or the C-Pig or does it apply equally to both? From what you say it sounds a bit like a hot version of the holydiver.
