Pickup suggestion request.
« on: April 24, 2013, 03:49:42 PM »
I am looking for some pointers on which pickups I should go with. I have a PRS Nick Catanese SE signature.
Has a mahogany body with a flame maple veneer top. Standard EMG 81/85 set came stock.
http://www.prsguitars.com/senickcatanese/specs.php link to the spec site if needed.

I play mostly hard rock/ metal in the style of testament/metallica/alice in chains/ and recently volbeat has caught my attention. I have a Laney Ironheart 60w head running through a Lopoline Custom 2x12 with Celestion V30's. There is nothing specific that I hate about my tone but I have heard so many great things about this company and I prefer to not have a battery powered guitar so passive pickups are what I am looking towards.

From the reading I have done on this forum and other sites, the miracle man seems to be a pretty good choice but I am just very unsure. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Calibrated vs uncalibrated. Matched set or a mixed combo. Thanks for your time.

I think Miracle Man could be the way to go. If I remember correct it's often reffered to as doing a great job when it comes to Metallica tones.

I have a Miracle Man and it's the first option I thought of too. For the neck, you might want to try a Cold Sweat which is a really popular neck pickup and is great for shredding Rock/Metal solos while also being quite versatile.

Uhhh... Miracle Man/Cold Sweat-neck! A newbie in the BKP-family just wrote a nice review about the MM/CS.

As said newbie who wrote that review, I highly recommend the CS/MM combo! You won't be disappointed, although if you do go with that combo you might also want to look for a good clean boost pedal (if you don't have one already).

On that note I can recommend a klone of the Zvex Superhardon. Amazing one and easy enough to build yourself if you got some skills. Or enlist any pedal builder. Maybe Juansolo can make you one for example (I got one of his that now sits on the side of a push pull pot in a guitar). Just the original feels a bit overpriced to me for what it is.
BKPs in use: 10th set / RY set / Holy Diver b, Emerald n / Crawler bridge, Slowhand mid MQ neck/ Manhattan n
On the sidelines: Stockholm b / Suppermassive n, Mule n, AM set, IT mid

I think I have made up my mind after hearing everyone's advice. Great review of the mm/cs combo by the way. I like the idea of the pedal as well. I somewhat proficient in soldering so I think it will be fun to try and build one. Thanks everyone for the help and advice.
