Trying to decide between pickups for an RGA8
« on: May 05, 2013, 09:39:27 PM »
Hi! My name is Joaquín, i live in Spain and im new in this forum.
Recently i got an Ibanez RGA8 with a mahogany body, maple neck, rosewood fretboard, fixed bridge, etc...
The stock pickups are not my favourites so i have been thinking buying some BKP.
I was thinking between a Cold Sweat calibrated set (popular option) or a Rebel Yell/VHII, because i heard i need bright pickups.
The tone im looking for is a versatile one that i could be between jazz/fusion (For example Guthrie Govan or Tom Quayle) and djent/progressive/metal (Monuments/Animal As Leaders/Scar Symmetry).
Some kind of fluid legato, with dynamics, sweeps, smooth chords...
Which of those would you think it suits me better?
Do you have another recomendation?
Are my combination between tones available?
Thanks for reading  :D

Hi and welcome!

8 strings and those styles are not really my area of expertise, but I can say that the PUs you mentioned should work imho. I however would suggest you look into the emerald set.
The Emerald bridge is definetly bright, can handle exteded scales and ranges really well and is somewhat of a favorite amongst metal players. They still are vintage hot though so versatility is really big on them too. Able to handle heavy chugging and classic rock.
The neck is an absolute favorite among a lot of members here. It is often described as a livelier, more organic version of the CS neck. It is smooth, fluid and just golden. Amazing shred PU but can go for sweet jazz / fusion tones just as well.

With that set I recon your bases should be covered nicely.

I only know Guthrie Govans play from his work and touring with Steven Wilson recently (man that man played great live...well everyone on that stage did xD) and I can absolutly see all he did work perfectly with the Emerald set.

Cheers!
BKPs in use: 10th set / RY set / Holy Diver b, Emerald n / Crawler bridge, Slowhand mid MQ neck/ Manhattan n
On the sidelines: Stockholm b / Suppermassive n, Mule n, AM set, IT mid

Emerald neck is unbeatable. For the bridge, I wouldn't argue with the Emerald. It's bright but if your guitar is naturally dark like a Les Paul it should work really well. Enough power for modern tones, highly articulate, very versatile and not too compressed at all. Quite a bit of PAF in there for a fairly hot pickup. The Cold Sweat would also be a great choice and has a bit more of a modern edge to it. The Cold Sweat would also work well with the Emerald neck.
BKP owned:

Bridge - Emerald; Cold Sweat; Crawler; A-Bomb; Holydiver; Miracle Man; Sinner; Trilogy Suite

Neck - Emerald; Cold Sweat; Crawler; Holydiver; Sinner; Trilogy Suite
