Music man JPXi - alternative pick ups
« on: May 06, 2013, 08:40:35 AM »
First up I'm very happy with my JPXi 6 in terms of feel and how it plays, but I was wondering if I could get a more 'vintage' lower gain tone from this guitar if I swapped out the Dimarzio pickups.

Any suggestions on what I could look into?

Also, does BKP make the triangular mounting tabs as on Dimarzio as the JPXi is routed for triangular fixing.

Dunno about the mounting thing.
About the PUs, you gotta give us a bit more of an idea what you want. There are up to 12 HBs that potentially are more vintage and lower gain then the dimarzios depending on how you look at it.
BKPs in use: 10th set / RY set / Holy Diver b, Emerald n / Crawler bridge, Slowhand mid MQ neck/ Manhattan n
On the sidelines: Stockholm b / Suppermassive n, Mule n, AM set, IT mid

Yes. Just ask for TRI TABS in the comment box.

Also, i have a JP6 (mahogany body/maple neck/Pau Ferro board) and i'm thinking of swapping the Crunch Lab/Liquid Fire for a Holydiver bridge and Emerald neck, but i'm looking to take the guitar in a more organic/vintage territory.

The HD has quite a strong midrange push, as the CL, but is infinitely more dynamic and less compressed than the Crunchlab.
A good replacement for the LiquidFire would be the Coldsweat, that is if you want to keep the same general vibe, the coldsweat is a lot cleaner.

i had an axis ss a while back and didn't get on with the stock pups. i looked into changing them for an abraxas set but was a little concerned about  how the lower output neck pickup would work with the split coil settings. so i considered mixing an abraxas bridge with an emerald neck as that had a bit more output. i then swapped the axis for a les paul which i have now put an abraxas set into. i know the axis and jpx are different beasts, but after experiencing the abraxas pups i think they would  have worked really well in the axis for the southern rock and blues styles i play. still not sure how well the moderate output neck pup would have worked in the split coil settings though.(in the les paul however it is absolutely perfect)
not sure if the axis and jpx have the same pups but mine measured 16k for the bridge and 15.2k for the neck.
as for the triangle feet i'm pretty sure bkp can do them.
hope my blah was helpful!

Yeah I had so many little heart attacks filing some of my beautiful bkp and praying not to damage them, i felt a little dumb when i realized this too...
Seems so obvious though... oh well

Also, I feel this should be a standard option to choose from in the shop.
Half my guitars need the triangular tabs and i've found myself requesting it a lot when purchasing from the shop lately.

That's one of the things i love with BKP, i have beautiful aged PAFs with vintage correct long legs and braided wire in my LPs and sleek Aftermath and co. with triangular short feets and 4 con in my modern guitars and i could ask just for the opposite if i wanted to.
