IEC fuse for 15W amp
« on: May 06, 2013, 04:29:27 PM »
I have lost my power cable for my tiny terror so I have bought a replacement lead for it. On the back of the amp it says mains fuse 500mA. I thought I would be able to find a half an amp fuse quite easily for the lead, however I can only find the glass ones which don't seem to fit. I have looked on other forums what other people have done and they all seem to be using 3A traditional BS 1362 fuses. I just wanted to check if I could get away with a 3A fuse. The amp itself has a fuse already built in so I am guessing the fuse in the plug is protecting the fuse in the amp? My apologies if it seems like a stupid question, I have virtually no knowledge on electronics.

Surely the fuse on the back panel is the 500mA one .
If you fit the plug with a 1A or a 3A fuse you will be fine
The 500mA on the amp is protecting the circuitry (that will be one of the glass type ones )

The fuse in the lead is to protect the lead.

A lead with a 3A fuse will only be rated to pass a maximum of 3A.

An amp should have its own fuse to protect it.

As long as the lead is capable of supplying enough current to the amp (which it is in your case), then you will be fine.

No that is a 250mA fuse. It says 'Mains fuse - 230V: T500mA'

I thought a 3A fuse would be ok, I just wanted to make sure. Thanks guys.

There are two fuses in the amp.
One is the HT fuse and is in the little round fuse holder on the back.
The other is the mains fuse and is inside the IEC socket in a little plastic clip that slides out from the socket's base that should actually hold two fuses. A working one and a spare.
You should see a little notch in the base of the IEC socket between the live and neutral pins that should help you get to that fuse.
The fuse in the lead can be as stated above and will be the ceramic type. The ones in the amp will indeed be glass.

I remember how my TT did not work one day, so I checked the main fuse. Was ok. Opened the thing up and checked the fuse inside. Was ok. Fudge.
Brought it into the store I bought it, tech could not figure it out, so he sent it in under warranty. When I picked it up he said they Orange guys said there was a third fuse somehwere in there neither of us was able to find and that was the one that went bye bye...

Reading this somewhat reminded me of that anecdote...not that it adds something to this really, but hey gotta get that post count up somehow xD
