Ceramic Blackhawk 7 - 1.9-2.1kHz Spike?
« on: May 11, 2013, 11:57:08 PM »
Hey guys, so I put a Blackhawk into my mostly walnut Carvin yesterday, and I'm finding a VERY prominent spike in the midrange area of about 1.8k-2.1k Hz when I pick hard, especially on the low B string. It's not nearly as prominent on the other strings and actually sounds great with chords, but playing individual low notes sounds like the presence and brightness got turned up past any normal limit. I tuned a half step down and go from the low 7th string being either A# or G#, and this mid range spike diminishes the "punch" of the low end a bit by being so prominent. I've heard it in sound samples of it, but it seems so overpowering when I play with my POD Farm patches. Essentially it sounds much like my Aftermath when i split it, but obviously with more oomph from the fact it's not split. Also, when I do split the Blackhawk the split sound somewhat eliminates the mid-spike. As far as I know my wiring is correct (99% sure), and I even messed around with different wiring options just to see and that did nothing significant.
I just ordered a 280K BKP pot for the bridge and I'm hoping that'll tone it down, but does anyone have any other recommendations? I knew the Blackhawk was supposed to be warmer sounding and it mostly is, but this sound spike makes playing low, individual notes very aggravating because they jangle instead of sounding huge. It's nice that everything is so clear and defined, but at the same time it makes everything a bit too bright for my taste.

Thanks!

Sorry if I'm stating the obvious, but have you tried using an EQ? POD Farm has a 4-band EQ (maybe more if you have the expansions: I only have the basic one) as one of the effects you can use. If you haven't, try putting it at the end of the chain, setting a band to the troubling area and cutting it out.

Never tried the pickup though, so I can't say anything other than that.

Yeah, I've tried that pretty successfully, but it also kills a crucial portion of my tone. It makes it sound like the tone knob is dialed back on all but the two lowest strings.

I just installed a ceramic Bhawk 7 set a week and a half ago and i havent noticed this . I think the mids are present but I havent found an annoying spike .

On my 25.5 tuned to ADADGBe the low A is punchy and defined  as hell with low single notes which was the main factor  I felt was lacking with the cpig I had in there .

Maton- jazz/JB
Cole Clark -NB Neck ,  Apig
Mayones Setius - Juggs

If I remember right, you can't adjust the peak width with the POD Farm EQ, can you? You could try using the POD Farm plugin in a DAW, then put some other EQ after it with a much narrower band: should let you kill the annoying frequency without losing everything around it and destroying the sound.

Might be worth a shot before money and soldering irons come out.
