Black Dog with Vintage 30's,.
« on: May 12, 2013, 02:15:34 AM »
Hello all,
I recently installed a Black Dog in the bridge of my American Strat. I am using an Orange OR15. With all the mids, it has made the high-mid spike of the V30 quite annoying. It is fatiguing my ears and making the sound seem kind of thin. If I turn the mid knob down I find there is not enough meat or punch then.

So, I think I need a 12 inch speaker for a 2x12 cab that gets rid of this spike. I play mostly modern punk rhythm and metal rhythm like the Sword. Lead sounds are not a concern. So, I want a meaty sound without harsh highs or harsh high mids. One thing I am confused about is speaker breakup. Is this desirable for this type of music? Or is that more for low gain blues type stuff? Or am I way off? Does a tight speaker not have breakup?

Thanks for any input.

You should check out the Eminence Swamp Thang.

how long have you used the V30's for? i believe they need a decent break in time, 20+hrs at gig volume. And they are rated at 60w but ideally need 30w to get them sounding good. I did that with my old V30's and the mid spike really did even out.

I had the same problem with v30s. I switched to eminence legend v128s back in january and i couldnt be happier.

They're like a v30 without the harshness, bloated lows and fizzy top end.

They still retain that overall vibe but theyre a lot more focused and detailed. They're also about 1/4 of the price too which is a nice bonus

Agree completely. I've had a number of combos with V30's and they are a very different animal when they are broken in. |If you Google 'celestion speaker break in' you'll find loads of info.

Well, the 2nd and 3rd Sword albums were recorded with Rockerverbs and an OR80 with V30s. The previous album was 25w Greenbacks and G12-65s.

I am personally a big fan of the Greenbacks. I can get lots of tones out of mine from blues, classic rock and even Metal. Megadeth used Greenbacks from 84-ish until 2004 or so. might want to check into those, or some copies like the Eminence GB12, Eminence Private Jack, or WGS Green Beret.

I used to use G12H-30s and V30 with my SLO clone, Mesa MKIII and Splawn Quickrod, but have nixed the mix in favor of the Greens.

Like others said, the speaker needs time to break in. However, the midspike is a bit a V30's trademark. If you want a swap, consider the WGS 12'' Veteran, which has V30-flavour with a smoothed out uppermidrange,
Mules, VHII, Crawler, MM's, IT's, BG50's.

the greenbacks are becoming a favourite of mine also, you might prefer them to the V30s, the downside in less headroom though.

Yeah, but the Greenbacks are sweet, aren't they?  8)

especially the G12H55 that's one badass speaker which I have massive GAS for at the moment, I'd love to swap it out of my orange 1x12 for the V30.

I'd like to try out the H55 version. I used the regular 70th anniversary G12H-30 for a while. With my 5150, they sounded spectacular. With some of my other amps, (Quickrod, MKIII, Stiletto) the G12H was too bright. The G12M-25 is absolute magic. Smoother tonal response. That syrupy rasp.

black shadows, classic leads, g12k100's, g12k85's will remove this mid spike without being overpowered
they are quite thick and flat voiced speakers and they quite big in small cabs

greenbacks are not spikey, but are very mid heavy as well, but more smooth sounding
I love them in 4x12's, but not sure about 2x12's

the g12h is punchier on the lows and has a subtle midscoop around the 800hz range
sounds likes a mid term between the organic vintage tone of a greenback and the punchy in your face tone of the v30
it seems to deliver a little more high end than both, and definitely a bigger and punchier bass, but less center and upper mids

if you're the uk, you could find yourself a chinese hiwatt HG212 "high gain" 2x12 cab
the chinese heavy duty 100w fane speakers in it are just AMAZING and they worked really well with any amp I've plugged into it
I got it on a trade intending to swap speakers for black shadows, v30's or scumback m75's (greenback clones), but totally forgot about that after playing the stock cab (not about sparing money at all)
they have this amazing punchy articulation that makes single notes pretty weighty
first time I realized what a "woody" tone could mean... sounds like I can acoustically hear my les paul resonating through the cab along with all the heavily driven amp sound
I usually take this stock cab over my marshall 4x12 with scumback h75's (g12h clones) and custom mg black dog speakers (weber parts, similar to the silver bell and the scumback j75, but with paper bobbin)
sometimes I loan this cab to a famous brazilian band as their guitarist loves it with his orange th30 (he has an orange 2x12 with vintage 30's, but he and his tech prefer the sound of my hiwatt cab by a mile)

Right, I forgot we were talking about a 2x12 here. The 25w Green might be a little thin in a 2x12, but I've heard that the 65w Creambacks are pretty sweet in a 2x12. Some of the Splawn dudes use them and love them. Kind of like the 25w Green, but a bigger overall tone, but not as round and somewhat tubby as a G12-65. Might want to check those, too. I did like the Classic Leads in a 2x12, also.
