N 1958 Gibson D
« on: May 13, 2013, 04:05:25 PM »
I have not won the lottery, it is not an LP 'burst.

It's not even an LP Junior (those are too pricey for me these days).

Instead what I've just ended up with is an ES-125, the bottom of the line, P-90 equipped, semi that Gibson produced from 1941 to the 70s. I found this one in a shop while on holiday, tried it, fell in love and, well, here we are.

It's a lovely guitar, all original apart from the knobs. The neck is chunky but very comfortable and, though the frets have a lot of wear, there's still a few more years in them. The tone is very relaxed blues and gently into earthy jazz territory plugged in, which is what I wanted as it's something I've never had before. Acoustically it's not loud but has a pleasing bluesy woody sound that will suit me for late night, not waking anyone, noodling. This was a bit of an impulse buy so I hope the magic lasts but thus far I'm really liking it. Also 1958 was quite a decent year for Gibson from what I hear.

Now should I put an EMG 85 in it...? Kahler perhaps?

It's a beaut. Defiantly go with the EMG.
It wasn't a mistake, it was chromaticism, I swear.

love that, absolutely gorgeous. used not abused as the cliche goes! the back is almost nicer than the front ;)

i too would love a 50s guitar one day. i have a 60s, a couple of 70s and a few 80s but nothing older.

your ES-125 is nothing I would consider at the moment considering my music style. however, i do like a bit of jazz and some blues so I wouldn't rule it out.

did a bit of an ebay search for these, and as you say they are quite affordable. i'd say you've done really well for spotting this!

Edit: thanks of course for the extra pictures, hope others appreciate them too!

Cool guitar.

The ES-225 is another 50's Gibson worth seeking out if you are into this sort of thing.

+1 to the EMG.  Also, what about a scalloped fretboard..?

Oh good idea. And some massive locking tuners of course.
