NPD - Marshall Blues Breaker Mk1
« on: May 15, 2013, 04:51:12 PM »
Was given this pedal by a friend of mine after i gave him one of two Sovtek Big Muffs that i had. Strange pedal in that it actually makes your tone sound worse, until you get the gain past 75% then it sounds awesome. I'm getting great tones out of this with my HSS Strat(IT's + Crawler). I like to run it before my Keeley compressor and with my guitar volume rolled back on the single coils it just adds a bit of sparkle then switch to the humbucker and open the volume up, it roars. Can anyone tell me if this is an English made mk1 or Korean made, i'm not really fussed, i'm of the opinion that if it sounds good it is good.
Cheers fellas.

very nice :) No idea about the UK/Korean thing, sorry.

So it sounds better with the gain past 75%? I have the mooer clone, and it doesn't have much level on tap so i normally keep the gain around 10 o'clock. I must try it up a bit to see

Congrats! I had a Guvnor I that served me for years. I replaced it with an Emma Reezafratzitz: sounds more ampish, more headroom and dynamics.

Which Mooer pedal is a clone of the Bluesbreaker? I'm guessing it's either the Blues Mood or the Blues Crab as they are both 'blues overdrives'

I've tried the modern Marshall pedal and the Boss Blues Driver and didn't think much of either of them.

I mean this thing truly sucks until the gain is at least 3/4. I thought it was a fault at first then i checked it out and all the mk1's are like this. Great sounds in the last quater of the dial though, my favourite gain pedal at the moment.
I would be interested to know how the clones of this sound, have any of them improved upon the original?

I had a JCM800 combo where the sound was truly abysmal in the first four fifths of the gain. To be honest it wasn't that good in the last fifth but at least it vaguely resembled a guitar tone.
PRS Bernie Marsden Abraxas set
PRS S2 Singlecut RY's
JV Strat  IT Bridge
Gibson SG JB bridge
Fender Mex Tele Thinline TV Jones Classics
Fender Bassbreaker 15
Yamaha THR 100 Dual

The blues crab is the bluesbreaker clone, far as i'm aware. the blues mood is (I think- I haven't tried it) a keeley blues driver clone.

The modern marshall bluesbreaker 2 is a different circuit from the old one, far as i'm aware.

I dunno, I haven't tried the original  Mine sounds pretty good, as i said, I'm running mine with the level on full and the gain on like 10 o'clock, sorta as a boost. it does a pretty good job of a fendery (seriously  ) blues type of tone, i think.

Just got a Mooer Blues Crab and I am loving it. I hit it with a MXR MICRO AMP from the 70s for some extra girth and clarity. My settings are:

Level 1 o'clock
Gain 2 o'clock
Tone 12 o'clock

Without the booster i'd have to crank the knobies an hour or so to get similar results. The guitar cleans us well using the vol control so I leave the Crab (great name BTW) on all the time. Righteous tone which has loads of sustain and a nervous tendency to emphasise harmonics that I love.
