Strat Humbucker

I need a low output bridge humbucker so it doesnt over power the single coils but it needs to be fat sounding. id like to be able to get everything from low gain rock/blues like the black keys to high gain stuff like van halen. been looking at the mule but just wnated peoples thoughts :)

i put a mule in a friends strat and i really like it. but a black dog might give you some more beef especially if its a maple neck and board.

its a rosewood neck and actually a pretty heavy guitar, its about 8-9lbs. its got quite a fat single coil in it already, it just sounds too shrill and doesnt have that 'chug' that humbuckers have.

wouldnt the black dog overpower the single coil??

a little maybe, but adjusting the height could balance things out. but as its a rosewood and a weighty strat, a mule could be the way to go.
someone else might be along who has had experience with a black dog in a strat with some more info.

Nearly any humbucker will overpower a vintage(hot) singlecoil a bit.
I think the Mule is better at it's place in mahogany based guitars. If you need something fat, look at the Abraxas or Crawler. I have a Crawler in my strat, paired with IT"s. Don't let yourself fooled by the dc-resistance (not the same as output), the balance is quite ok. The Crawler splits great too, you have F-quack at the fourth position and the Crawler splitted (alone) provides a nice beefy teletone. The Crawler has enough PAF-pedigree, it's not modern sounding. Black Dog could be an option too.

That's a quickie!  :D
Crawlers: clean, funk (split + IT), blues, bluesrock, hardrock. I don't play metal, for that the Crawler might not be tight enough. But anything else... Kills in a strat. I play in a coverband and cover nearly everything with my HSS-strat. The IT's are versatile too.

There is one, but you can only compared DCs of PUs wound with the same wire to get an idea of hotness and compression and even then the magnets used can throw you a serious curveball. Bottom line: DC resistances are basecally useless to about 90% of the people 90% of the time.

Well, the Crawler can easily take more gain than what EVH used in the first two albums.  Now back to your initial specs :
- works fine on a strat : yes
- fat : yes
- low gain blues/rock tones : yes
- 80s metal hi-gain : yes
- low output  : well... no. Nothing over the top, but it's still a rather powerful pickup.
