Getting a valve tester this week.
« on: May 29, 2013, 09:26:05 PM »
I decided to get myself one of the Orange valve testers as I have plenty of tubes in my racks and it would be good to test the valves and grade them for best purpose.

I did wonder if by having the tester here if anyone would be interested in having valves checked or tested for a token amount.

Got myself some new toys for the rack of doom as well

These all look like good purchases Jonathan!

The new modules are particularly intriguing

The new modules are particularly intriguing

Marshall plexi with controls for each channel and the facility to stack the channels like  on Randy Rhoads amp
Angel = ENGL can do Blackmore, STeve Morse, Savage, Powerball etc.
Salvado = Soldano SLO with all the trimmings
Camerock = Cameron CCV. A real monster of an amp

Also not shown .... Mash-oldano = hybrid of Marshall JCM800 and Soldano SLO

Spent much of the day testing every valve I could get my paws on.
Really simple to use.
And it's made me toss out a few preamp valves that I had suspected weren't working very well and it's confirmed this to be the case.
Sometimes it fails preamp tubes where the two sides are so out of step with each other gainwise - more than 5 steps on a scale of 1-15 (a 12ax7 has two triode stages in it)
It's also failed an EL34 power tube that I thought was ok but may have failed for a safety aspect. (I retested it several times and it failed at the same point in the diagnostics each time)

Nice work! A very good investment for someone like yourself. I would say it was a no-brainer for anyone who deals with amps, to be honest.

The VT1000 runs a number of tests such as gas (grid current) which would fail a power valve.
