Going +1 and other coffee rambles
« on: May 30, 2013, 03:22:49 PM »
Took a little car lingo in to the board here, but that's where I am.  Instead of referring to wheel size and overall tire diameter, I'm talking pickup juju.

I recently posted about moving up a notch or so from the Abraxas bridge, but I never considered the Veneer 63 in the neck - man, do these two like to play together, but going to a louder bridge will warrant a louder neck singlecoil.  For those of you considering a H-S setup on your axe, this one works extremely well.  My Tele has a very lightweight mahogany body.  In fact I thought they sent me a hollow body initially.  It seems to be really balanced with respect to the tone it produces.  Perfect pickup platform; less than perfect neck platform.

Now, Ben French has been phenomenal with suggesting bridge pickups for my intended use.  He actually recommended the A-Bomb over my current choice of the Diver.  Trouble is I have yet to hear a sample that suits my style of playing, so it's a huge risk.  I don't play scooped mids!  The clips I've heard have the Diver sounding fairly dynamic, which I like.  But!  This is another thread and I have the coffee rambles.

From the samples I've heard, those damn Apaches sound wonderful, but I'm wondering how they'd balance with the Diver, VHII, or A-Bomb.  OT, but speaking of clips - that damn Stormy Monday blues clip sent shivers down my spine and I'm shamefully aroused.  Wonder which amps are being used in these clips.

Don't overlook the Rebel Yell if you like a middly sound - I love it in mahogany guitars.
A bit more spank to the tone than the holy diver - bit more dynamic to my ears (I also consider the Abraxas to be nicely dynamic too.)

that's what I suggested in the first thread  :D
the nailbomb may seem like a huge jump, but it's not like that
the nailbomb is pretty hot for sure, but more like in seymour duncan jb or custom output levels, so nothing extreme
you said you wanted more power and thickness without sacrificing the top end, and that's what it offers
it has a bigger bass and more top end than the diver, but it's not a scooped pickup by any means
both nailbomb and holy diver have different characters from the abraxas
the nailbomb is louder, punchier, more spanky, while the diver is middier, more vocal and more dense sounding
pretty much like the differences between a celestion G12H and a celestion G12M

still not sure about what you're playing, but here's lots of non brutal nailbomb videos:

the camera noise suppression is messing with the louder distorted sounds on this one, but you can get the idea

I know you did!  Haha I posted samples in the player section (https://bareknucklepickups.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=30025.0).  Thanks for compiling all of this; it's so difficult to do while I'm working.  I'm going to have a listen and see if i need to change my order!

the diver is great as well, and my favorite between the two, but it's all a matter of personal taste after all
listening to your songs now (good stuff)  :D
both should work pretty well for your rig and styles
even something more modern like the miracle man should do the job pretty well

forgot this guy, who also has some good nailbomb videos:

Eric, you really went above and beyond in your responses, brother.  VERY much appreciated!  I think I'm going to throw the Abraxas into another mahogany guitar I have - strat - and roll with it like that. We will see!
