Strat wiring question
« on: June 05, 2013, 08:26:33 PM »
Hey all!

Question regarding wiring a nailbomb into an american stratocaster.
I have to admit i'm pretty new to the whole wiring process but so far I've determined where all the wiring should go from the diagram provided on the bareknuckle site. The only problem is i'm not quite sure what to do with the white and green wires. I'm assuming they will control the splitting of the pick up when the selector is set to position 2. So that should be a mix of the middle single coil pick up and the bridge, right? Currently I think the middle pick up is wired into the space on the selector that I need to put the green and white wires on. Should these wires be added or does this require a little bit of re-wiring?
I did a dry run on a guitar last night and removed a humbucker only to find that there were two wires just taped together and not actually soldered to anything. I'm assuming these are the same wires as the green and white ones on my nailbomb (differing colour codes). So in theory the pick up should work without these? I just won't have the split option?

Hi,

Your question belongs in the tech section but I will answer anyway.

The white and green wires are soldered together and not connected to anything for the normal humbucking operation as the junction of these wires puts the coils in series. If this connection is put to ground then one coil is shunted, leaving only one coil active. So your assumption was correct.

So that should be a mix of the middle single coil pick up and the bridge, right? Currently I think the middle pick up is wired into the space on the selector that I need to put the green and white wires on. Should these wires be added or does this require a little bit of re-wiring?

1: yes. 2: Don't add the wires - you will be coupling the middle pickup to them permanently. A little bit of rewiring has to be done - just follow the diagram.

Yes to all of the above.

Cheers Stephan
