earthing problem?
« on: June 06, 2013, 08:14:53 AM »
my jazzcaster is a work in progress, walnut body, warmoth 24.75" scale conversion neck, stetsbar trem, oak grigsby 3 way switch ala strat, cts 500k pots and so far The creamery wide O neck pick up, still undecided about the bridge, something fat but clean. I have an earthing issue I think, hums until I touch the strings, what can I do?

have a look inside, it can't be earthed properly, hopefully you will find out that the earth wire isn't soldered properly and it might be as easy as just resoldering one wire if you're lucky. It's not that hard to solder unless it's a push pull mini pot or something unusual, if you aren't sure take it to a guitar tech.

soldering is all good, but earth to bridge is only a cable trapped between the body and the bridge. Not sure how to make a good connection.

thinking about it, the earth to the bridge must be ok if I am earthing the hum through me via the strings, guess the issue is somewhere in the wiring, would that make sense?

found the problem methinks, there is no ground to the tone pot from the volume pot as per wiring schematic, may also explain why the tone pot doesn't work.

connected ground to tone pot, all is quiet and tone pot works :)
