Joe Satriani tour
« on: June 09, 2013, 10:56:53 PM »
So I booked myself a ticket to see Joe Satriani at the Shepherd's Bush Empire next week. He's always been my favourite of the post Van Halen era shredders and as a pimply adolescent, Surfing with the Alien, Flying in a Blue Dream, and The Extremist were all on heavy rotation.

I hadn't listened to them in ages but about three months ago I had a sudden desire to hear them all again and it turns out I still really love them and the tunes/riffs/solos were still deeply imbedded in my head. I'm not up to speed with his recent releases but I'll give 'em a listen over the next week or so in preparation. I am actually really excited, even if I don't know most of the new material it'll be a blast to see some dazzling musicianship for an evening.

Now all I'm doing is trying to work out if the 16 year old me would be pleased or appalled that the 37 year old me is going to a Satriani gig...

I'm not really a fan any more (I think the last one I bought was the Joe Satriani album, which I've just confirmed was way back in 1995!), but I still like the early stuff.  Not Of This Earth has the distinction of being the first album I ever bought on CD (I already had it on vinyl).

Hope you enjoy the gig!  I like the Empire, good venue.
BKPs I've Got:  RR, BKP-91, ITs, VHII, CS set, Emeralds
BKPs I Had:  RY+Abraxas, Crawlers, BD+SM

I saw Satch at a multi-guitarist gig last September and I enjoyed him alot more than I thought I would!

I've only got Surfing With The Alien and Not Of This Earth of his albums, so am not familiar with anything else apart from the songs from those albums. I think he's also my favourite of the 'Shread Type' guitarists too; he seems to give a bit of a damn about melody etc and not just look how fast my fingers are. Not like cough **yngwie** cough  who also played at the same gig.
Selling lots of gear, enquire within!......

The only time I saw him was the G3 tour in 1998, with Michael Schenker and Uli Jon Roth.

I mostly remember hairstyling details!   Satriani had only recently started shaving his head, which seemed a bit weird at the time, and Schenker was going through a bizarre phase of dyeing his hair (and beard!) black..... I don't think I've ever seen a Schenker gig where he was actually on form.

I'm also still a fan of satriani, he is usually really good live, last time I saw him was with the G3 robert fripp tour in 2004, fripp was incredible. Is it on at the apollo in manchester?

Well that was a bloody good night out. Great set, awesome musicianship of course. He really does seem to thoroughly enjoy playing music to people and he does write a very good tune. He played a good mix of old (all of which I knew) and songs off the latest album which I've listened to a fair bit over the last week and has reallly grown on me. I have a broad grin and and skip in my step after that.
