Someone on here a while ago told indy not to use delay or reverb in front of my jcm800...
Why?
What kind of sound would it make, hehe?
Would it be useable, or just damn weird?
Please nobody suggest putting an effects loop in cuz its just not happenning brother.

I've been thinking about this too - we're both 800 owners

. I've heard the same things, but I've played into my other (solid state) amps before and crammed all manner of effects straight into the amp (no FX loops), and it all sounded fine. I can't for the life of me see why it would be any different with the 800, except that maybe I run it with a degree of overdrive all the time. (but not that much)
Also, none of John Frusciante's amps, and I believe Dave Gilmour's (not certain), had FX loops, and they have great tones, so who knows?

I know a guitarist who has an 800 combo with a Danecho in front of it. Nothing wrong with it to my ears.

the main argument against delay or reverb before the pre-amp is that the delay will be distorted if you're using more than a little gain. for cleaner tones it'll work fine, usually. or if you've got a distortion effect in the chain as well, put it before the delay or reverb, and then you're adding space to the distorted sound, rather than distorting the reverb trail, which would sound unnatural and, frankly, s***e.

I have two echoes. Both dano's. A rock-a-bey and a Shift Daddy. The first one is better after the overdrive and the second one is better before the overdrive.

I think it's best to experiment with different positions and see what's best.

This may sound dumb but I have never owned a stack - can you put reverb or delay between the head and the cab via the speaker cable or would that cause a meltdown?

No you cant and yes it could well cause a meltdown.

You can place the verb in the FX loop, however.

A lot of older amps don't have FX loops, and it would be intersting to know how the guitarists of the 70's used their effects live.

From reading a couple of Gilmour sites the effects are not used via the amp FX loops (if they indeed have any), I did a lot of reading last week about his setups.

There are some amps which simply do not like delay effects (apparently the zvex nano head for example loathes delays)
