BYOC wah drop-in kit, anyone tried it?
« on: June 22, 2013, 12:23:07 PM »
Looking at getting a BYOC wah drop-in kit as my Vox is on its last legs now. Has been slowly deteriorating over the years and now it won't even wah properly, it's more of a wuhhh now  Any ideas if it'll fit straight into a Vox V847 enclosure?

This is the kit in question:

Or anything else better for the money that won't involve building? Saying that I kinda fancy a guitar project, haven't had one for a while!

The BYOC is ok but mine didn't sound as good as some other wahs
look out for the BBE one - superb

My two I have now are the Dunlop CAE wah and the Vox handwired - both beyond compare
The CAE is so darn good.

Hmm those are both quite expensive, can the byoc not be modded for similar tones? What didn't you like about it? I don't really use a wah that much and I like how my V847 sounds, or I should say used to sound..

just to add some balance, i'm not 100% sold on my cae. it's quite modern and smooth-sounding. also the sweep is slightly weird to my ears/fingers (but that might be nothing more complex than the pedal having a slightly different travel to my bog standard crybaby and my foot might not be used to it yet).

of course, mine could be dodgy. mine's the only one i've tried.

EDIT: i haven't tried the drop-in byoc one.

It could be the pot is wearing out, or the inductor has gone, you might not need to change out everything.

Yeah there's a chance it's the pot I guess, I occasionally get a lot of screechy feedback with the pedal rocked all the way forward. Are they easy to source and replace then?

I could build you up a GC board if you wanted: http://www.grindcustomsfx.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=380 Quite fond of that one.

Otherwise if the pots go they tend to go scratchy. Likewise if you get a crackle when sweeping it could be some caps bleeding to ground.

The CAE is not very expensive for what you get: two modes and a built in booster, all footswitchable. But if you like the VOX get a used one. They're plenty out there.

Plenty easy, dunlop (who i'm pretty sure make vox also, or at least used to) do hotpotz replacements, and there's plenty of bespoke ICAR taper pots from various boutique places like area 51 who also do a complete pre-assembled wiring harness. If you're in the UK, Stu castledine does a similar thing.

The CAE is a great wah, but i prefer fulltones. Although if someone asked me what to buy, i'd probably say the CAE as well because as far as readily available, high quality wahs go, you can't beat em.

probably worth pointing out it's a fair bit cheaper on thomann than in the UK, if you do decide to go for the cae one.
