A-Warpig w/ Set Neck - Mahog or Maple?
« on: June 27, 2013, 03:45:34 PM »
Hello guys!
I've been thinking in a guitar with Warpig pickups for a while, specially after I talked with a friend here in Brazil who made a test with a lot of Bare Knuckles for a costumer of him...
But I think I've read that it may not work that well with a all mahogany, set neck guitar and on the products' page BKP says it is best suited for "double cutaway/bolt-on guitars"...
The idea would be a Dean ML style guitar, I've already ordered the wood for the body, good ol' Mahogany... But I'm thinking in changing the neck wood to Maple + Ebony fretboard, do you think that is the best idea???
What is the experienceof you with Explorers, V's and other mahogany guitars with the Warpig?
Cheers

Apparently they work in SGs, which are all mahogany and set-neck but have a thinner body than most.

This has no real basis other than a hunch really, but I would say maybe get a maple neck. Well that is if you donīt have a rather bright piece of mahagony which can also happen. If donīt wanne go for the extremely fat and big sound the maple neck should lighten things up a tad, not really reducing the low end but adding a bit of higher mids and treble to keep a balance.
On the ebony fretboard I am not as sure, as I find ebony to mostly add a snappy bright attack but sides that to not have that big an effect on the sound. That is my very personal experiece though. So again, if you would like to have more attack, ebony might be cool.
BKPs in use: 10th set / RY set / Holy Diver b, Emerald n / Crawler bridge, Slowhand mid MQ neck/ Manhattan n
On the sidelines: Stockholm b / Suppermassive n, Mule n, AM set, IT mid

I've sold an A-pig to a friend and installed it myself in his Gibson Faded Flying V
it was an early version with ebony fingerboard and moon inlays
it sounded darkish, but not in a bad way
pretty big, round, but still articulate tone, and cleaned up pretty well
sounded great even tuned down to drop C
didn't feel too hot and sounded really good with an overdrive pedal for heavier stuff and also with fuzz
Riff Raff, Mules, Black Dog, VHII's, Cold Sweat
