Another wiring issue
« on: June 28, 2013, 11:17:43 AM »
Hi,
I am currently trying to fix the wiring on one of my guitars.
Itīs a HSH with 5 way switch, 1 vol, 2 tone and 1 pot for splitting the HBs.

Problem is that in the normal HB only and HB plus middle, non split positions the screw coil of the other HB is always on as well, which as you can imagine makes for a less than perfect sounds.
When I turn the split pot down all is working as intended though.

Anyone got any idea where the problem is and how I can fix it?

I quickly drew up my current, faulty wiring, well the parts I think are relevant at least. If I am missing something that could be important let me know and Iīll draw that too.

Cheers!

Edit: I have spend more time thinking about this and my current theory is that the problem stems from both white / green pairs being connceted to the same point, unlike the wiring diagramms for push pull pots I have found.
That way the coil from the other HB always has connection with the active one and therefore keeps one coil on at all times.
Seems to make sense to me right now. Do you get what I mean?

Any ideas on how I can decouple them and keep the split pot going?

Edit II: Ok still thinking on my own here. Currently I am thinking I could put in a simple 9v1 zener diode in series with each of the green/white pairs to keep the current in line.
I donīt think that will have an effect on the tone, will it?

Edit III: Put in diodes and while the unwanted coils stopped being on the split also stopped working....
Anyone got anything?

Alright, it seems no one know how to fix this with the roll off pot.

Now if I would instead put in a simple 2 way switch, which one would I have to get and how would I wire it? Anyone can help out on that?

Could I maybe even get a 3 way and have the middle position be a split with resistors in series?

If you're willing to sacrifice a tone control for the single coil, you can combine these schematics:

https://bareknucklepickups.co.uk/main/downloads/schematics/general/hsh_hss/hsh__1_vol__1_tone__5_way_with_auto_coilsplit.pdf - This one will give you an idea how to wire the switch.

https://bareknucklepickups.co.uk/main/downloads/schematics/general/hsh_hss/hss__1_vol__2_tone__5_way_with_auto_coilsplit.pdf - Use this one to wire tone controls. But connect the wires going to the tone pots to neck and bridge (and not neck and middle as in the schematic) hot leads.

Best of all, you can even use the regular pots, no need for diodes, etc.

Or you can have your wiring, but instead of Green and White wires going to the pot, use a switch.
You can have a DPST (Double Pole Single Throw) switch wired like this: http://www.beavisaudio.com/techpages/Switches/DPST.gif

1 - Neck Green and White
3 - Bridge Green and White
2 and 4 - Ground

Or in case of DPDT switch http://www.beavisaudio.com/techpages/Switches/DPDT.gif :

1 - Neck Green and White
4 - Bridge Green and White
2 and 5 - Ground
3 and 6 - Nothing (pretty sure it should be nothing, but maybe ground can go here as well)

Hope this helps.

Thanks a load megaup987.

I think I will try the switch version. Pretty much want tone controll for all PUs as especially for single coils (split or middle) they actually are usefull for me.

Looking at it now I should have figured out the switch easily myself. Thanks for helping me along.

Suprisingly I have no fitting switch around (this actually is suprising as I have a more than a handfull of parts around), bit I will order one within the week and try it out.
Now I just gotta decide if I just go simple DPST for split / normal or if I try a DPDT on/off/on for split/normal/split with resistors....

Put in a the on off on switch today after I got it yesterday. I wired it so that one of the positions is in series with a 2,2k resisitor, though I might up that to 3k at some later point.
It resolved the issue and I am pleased with the result. Looks cool and work nicely with the Crawler. Now this guitar really has a sh*tload of positions to choose from. The regular 5 way + 4 split versions + 4 half split versions and a build in Zvex SHO clone on a push pull volume pot. Plus two tone pots, one for the neck and middle and one for the bridge.
The range on this thing is pretty cool now.

I especially like the half split on the bridge with the slug coil (the one on) being the outer. Cool stuff.

Thanks for the help one last time!
