Left handed wiring for Strat style guitars
« on: July 02, 2013, 11:21:28 AM »
Hello. Im sure there are other threads about left handed wiring so apologies.

After searching the internet for ages trying to find out how to make a Strat harness for a left handed Strat style guitar,
I feel even more baffled than when I started.

Can someone please tell me which CTS pots to buy in order to increase the volume turning the thing clockwise?

Im gonna admit that Im at my wits end with all this. Reverse taper? Audio taper? People on other forums both say these are wrong/right... Nothing is clear...

Aprntly Ive got to use the right handed wiring and can just transfer it to a left handed scratchplate. That doesnt seem right  :o

Ive been making right handed wiring harnesses for years but never had to do a left handed one till now. And Ive always
though that Ill cross the bridge when I come to it. I assumed it would be easy.
But this is a mine field of opinions and assumptions.

Thankyou in advance of any info on this  :? Richard.

wouldn't you just switch the wires on the outside tags?
So many pickups, so little time

Well there is a certain amount of fatigue which sets in answering the same questions many times over.

Not that that applies to your question, I suspect it's a simple case of not knowing the answer.

Sorry and all that.

The pots will be the same, wiring to the lugs might be reversed ( at work right now, so I can't test properly), everything else will remain the same.  Not sure if Hendrix had his Strat rewired.

There's no such thing as left handed pots, a potentiometer turns left and right, it's just how your wire it up as a resistor that changes.
I'm not good enough, technically, to be a classic musician. I lack discipline.

In theory you can just swap the lugs around however the taper will be off. You will want it to have a reverse taper if you can find one.

With a standard pot it will work however you will get a lot of difference at the start of the rotation and not much at the other end.

If you use a linear taper pot it will be the same both ways but some people dont like the linear taper for volume.
