NGD - PRS

Having sold my Jackson SL3, today I picked up a new PRS SE Custom 24 in purple quilt. My other guitar is also a PRS SE Custom 24 and is the 25th Anniversary model in vintage yellow. I've always loved that PRS but I wasn't struck on the very flat top and I really don't like where the selector switch is so when this model was launched with both of these problems fixed, I was immediately interested. The only thing the new model lacked was a quilted finish so when this version came out, I couldn't resist. It also comes with a push/pull coil split but won't stay on this guitar. All of the electrics on this guitar will be transferred to the 25th Anniversary model where I intend to probably fit a Crawler set with an out of phase middle position. The Holydiver/Emerald set and all of the BKP electronics will be moved into this one. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder but I love her  :D

I agree that the flat topped SE CU looks wrong somehow. I have one too, and I can't really jive with it because of that slab board. Plays great, but somehow my shallowness cuts through even though I don't want it too.

Acoustically it doesn't seem miles away from the other Custom 24 I have so I'm guessing that the slightly carved top has minimal impact compared to the flat top version. I will report back more once I've transferred the pickups and electronics over. As usual the quality is excellent, though the setup wasn't as good as the last one I bought. That may of course just be down to the store. From my perspective, the action is far too high, the fingerboard needs a touch of lemon oil and the adjustment screw for the trem arm was so loose it was almost falling out. Minor niggles that are easily solved but I wish stores or manufacturers would take a bit more care.Other than those setup issues, the quality of the guitar is as excellent as I've come to expect from PRS. Those setup issues were no worse than i found on my Japanese Jackson and I still find the quality of a Korean PRS guitar to be superior to other Korean guitars I've tried.

Looks good, the carved top definitely gives a little extra touch of class and presumably makes playing a little more comfortable too?

I got used to the flat top to a large extent and the new one is certainly more beveled than carved but there's no doubt it does make it a bit more comfortable to play. The thing I notice most is the change in the positioning of the pickup selector. I never liked it situated behind the bridge as it's just not a natural place to get to when you're playing. When I swap the electrics over I may see if on the old one I can move the toggle to where the tone pot is atm and vice versa.
