NJD: Going from shifts to office hours.
« on: July 17, 2013, 01:34:23 PM »
Eyup, so I got a new job. I've taken a paycut 'cause it's only 120hrs a month and a bit less pay but I've taken it because it's a better job, it has room to move up the system leading to more money than I'm currently on and it's secure where as my current job is what it is and it could end at anytime, really.

So, here's the daft question, how is it working normal office hours? I'm a little apprehensive as I've never worked office hours and I'm used to working 12hr days but only a few days at a time before some rest. I'm guessing it's going to take a while to get used to and have the discipline to wake up every day. The new job is 9:30-3:30 mon-fri so it's hardly taxing so on paper I'll have lots of free time (albeit in the evenings and weekends rather than straight days off in the week). Too much time, actually as it's a good 45-50 hours less actual work a month plus I get things like bank holidays and a couple of weeks at xmas off. I'm hoping to find a part time job for a few evenings a week, which I hope is realistic?

Congratulations!!  :D

I'm working 9.30 to 7pm usually, plus a fair amount unpaid overtime whenever needed. 25 days a year holiday, which I do make a point of taking.

So basically, your 9.30 to 3.30 sounds great to me ;) You might be able to squeeze in a bit of part-time work, but don't let it impact your main job, and also avoid telling them if you can since it might create a bad impression.

Sounds alright, but what's your travelling time like?  That can eat up big chunks of your "free" time.

Cheers :)

Too late Gwem but they seemed cool with it, in-fact they appreciated that I was taking a cut in pay and offered me to work only 4 days with them and 1 in the other job to boost my wages, which I said no to because I wanted to look committed to them but it showed that they were flexible and understanding.

10min walk Philly :)

10min walk Philly :)

Excellent!  :D

That would be great, although I must say (living and working in London) I would prefer to live 10 mins from where I work rather than work 10 mins from where I live, if you see what I mean.

No, completely different!

What I mean is:  if I was only a 10 min walk away, I would rather live in the area I work (central London) than work in the area I live (shitety south London)!  :P

Office hours = go out every weekend and dance like a muppet, grant most of my friends who do this drink far too much get a hangover then waste half their weekend recovering

Gym is always busy when everyone's finished for the day, especially on a Monday when it's international chest day, luckily I live 5 minutes from the gym so I just go later on

Feline = Good
Croydon = Bad

(no offence, Jonathan!)

No comment about Boris, except I will repeat my not-so-fascinating fact that he and I were born on exactly the same day.  How differently our lives have turned out!

urgh Boris. I saw him on his bike recently and I've bumped into him in work before. He's quite small and round for all the cycling he does, not that this would impact his height.

I work shifts... I'm worried about going to 9-5 should that ever have to happen. I think I'd loose my mind. 3 days in work in a row is just about enough before I start to think about destroying humanity.

Lots of business dinners and lunches in the world of politics, I guess.

I didn't realise how relatively short he is until I saw that pro-celebrity tennis match with Andy Murray, Tim Henman, Jonathan Ross etc a few weeks ago.  Before that I'd always been under the impression he was a big - and tall - lummox.

(He's still a good few inches taller than me, though)

Congrats on the new job-- I switched from a job which had a lot of travel, where often the work would be daft hours and not 'office' at all, but I moved back to a previous job in November which is office hours, and I find it really boring compared to before... I think i'm just not cut for office hours. Granted if it was better money then it'd be more tolerable, but as it stands i'm looking to move already. Your situation sounds really good though, congrats again!)
