1958 Epiphone Flying V - Korina, New BKP's?
« on: July 20, 2013, 07:25:55 AM »
Hello all,

i just picked a 1958 Epiphone Korina Flying V. Pretty light and resonant (I think - it's only been a few hours)

I play pretty heavy rhythm parts, thrash, percussive palm mutes - pretty stop and go. But with my lead and higher range stuff it's very melodic and I'd even say emotional - think dorian, mixolydian scales, etc.

I'd like to drop in some BKP's I've never used before or don't currently have. Here's what I have:

2012 Gibson Les Paul Standard - Black Dog Set
1989 Gibson Les Paul Custom - Ceramic Nailbombs
2005 PRS Custom 24 (Brazilian Board) - VH2's
2011 PRS Custom 24 - Ceramic Black Hawks
1992 SG Special - Ceramic Warpig
2011 Schecter Solo-6 Custom - Aftermath

I've had:

Holy Divers: In a 1991 Gibson Les Paul Classic - Didn't like them (could've been the match)
Riff Raff's: in the same SG Classic mentioned above- didn't like them, however I don't love the C Warpigs either so I'm starting to think it is the guitar
Pain Killer: In the 2011 PRS Custom 24 from above - hated it but loved them in a ESP/LTD EC-1000 I no longer have

Any thoughts would be much appreciated.

Cheers, Dave

I just put up 6 video's comparing my current BKP's

I would pick something that matches the guitar, rather then being an addition to your collection of BKP's.
Maybe Rebel Yells or Cold Sweats.
Mules, VHII, Crawler, MM's, IT's, BG50's.

Thanks! I was actually looking at those two options. I'm wondering if the Cold Sweats would be to bright with the "Korina"

I don't think the Cold Sweats would be too bright in a korina guitar, but not sure if those Epiphones are actually korina?

Pretty sure at one point they were stated to be korina-veneered alder bodies with maple necks - which would be brighter - but I've also read some comments from people saying theirs were mahogany, or multiple pieces of real korina, or that they've used different woods at different times... who knows for sure?
BKPs I've Got:  RR, BKP-91, ITs, VHII, CS set, Emeralds
BKPs I Had:  RY+Abraxas, Crawlers, BD+SM

Thanks,
The neck seems to maple for sure - as for the body - I'm not sure. I found a Black 89 Gibson V for only $150 (US) more - thoughts?

I like the smaller pickguard, color, grovers, and string through of the epi better, but an original '67 - 89 reissue - I don't know

Design-wise, I like the '58 style V much more than the '67 style.

But given the choice between a Gibson and a Korean Epiphone it'd be Gibson all the way for me.

I have a Korean Epi Explorer and a Gibson SG, and the recommendation I would give based on experience of my Cold Sweat neck and A-bomb bridge (I haven't put the A-pigs into the Explorer yet, but that was what I decided on after talking to BKP and people here) would be the Rebel Yell set, which apparently combines some of the characteristics of the two pickups I already have but sort of tones them down a bit and adds some new characteristics as well that sound suited for Gibsons & Epiphones.  My next set of BKPs would be a Rebel Yell set.  They would also be a good set  that you could swap between your existing guitars (e.g., the SG) as they would suit any of the Gibsons and probably a few of your others as well.

Thanks for the advice. That was actually the plan before I originally posted based on sound clips and the type of guitars I have & like. If I don't love them in the V I'll move things around. Cheers
