As a reporter I just wrote an article about 3D-printing. We are on the doorstep of a new digital revolution. I witnessed the printingproces of some spectacles complete with the (plastic) glass, measured exactly to fit the eyes of the customer. Finish was flawless. The big advantage for companies is that they don't need much stock anymore. More and more there will be production on demand. Besides that, with 3D printing it's easy to do customorders. The director of the company I spoke (they produce all kinds op optical parts for lights) said that 3 D printing for metal will change production totally. Your carengine will be printed in the near future!

Soon we will have Star Trek style replicators. When they get the holodeck sorted, you'll never hear from me again.

As long as I get in there first it's all good. Wouldn't want to be the poor bar-steward who cleans up the holodeck...
