I would like your thoughts
« on: August 04, 2013, 12:26:37 AM »
Been experimenting the last few days, with the joy of unusually having the time and space to do some recordings, thought i would revisit an old favourite i wrote with a friend over ten years ago.

Heres the original, recorded in leeds in 2004, with a cr@ppy OD pedal, stock pickups and a marshall solid state amp:

and heres my own 2013 version, with a PodXT Live (never recorded with before) and as usual, Miracle Man pickups:

Its just for fun, so im not worried about any slight clipping or bad playing  Kinda used to it nowadays! Makes a change from practicing the same boring stuff over and over, just nice to go back to why you enjoyed playing when you started, ey.

I like the 2012 more, has more beef, although it sounds a bit weird on the bass drum hits.

2004 sounds thinner, has more clarity but lacks the punch, snare needs some reverb or something

I prefer the second version, except that the tone is a bit too "hollow" sounding. The two guitar tracks are way too panned away from each other, to the right and left - and I think that, that's the reason. Try centering the two tracks more. Almost right in the middle, i'd say.

I agree with JDC's comments.

the first mix lacks the deep bass, the second is a bit better in the bass end but lacks the dynamics and open sound in the air frequencies of mix no1. As a person who does mixing and mastering for other people I'd prefer mix no1 because I could boost the sub bass and remove the mud whilst making it louder whereas mix no2 is already mastered and too damaged to save. BUT they aren't the worst mixes by a long shot I've ever heard.

I'd say try experimenting more with panning to make things sound cleaner as well as a bit of echo and reverb here and there.

interesting, thanks guys. I always seem to have the problem of "clarity" in my recordings, never figured it out
