Acoustic bass pickups
« on: August 08, 2013, 07:22:43 PM »
Hi,
I got an issue and cause it is not directly BKP related I will put it here.

For finishing school 2 years ago I got an Ibanez acoustic bass. Really cool thing and all, but one issue: The build in piezo PU s*cks. I generally hate piezo systems and on bass they are even worse.
For recording I can use a mic, though it would be nice to have a plug and play alternative for quick ideas, but I also wanne be able to amplify it, be it just to be able to keep up with a acoustic band in a live setting actually delivering the volume needed.

Now the question is if there is a nice PU system out there I can use. I would want to stay clear of piezo.

For my acoustic I got a LR Baggs Lyrics system which is is a mic mounted under the bridge plate which I dig.
Not a system that exists for bass or would hold its own there.

If there was something like it I would like to go magnetic here. I hear there once was a magnetic acoustic bass PU but it went out of production. If I could get my hands on one of those it would be swell.

Any suggestions what I might be interrested in?

I have though about getting a BKP jazz bass PU and devising a mount to put it in the soundwhole, but then I would probably need normal bass strings due to magnetism and I am unsure if they could sound good acousticly still (got nickel strings on my acoustic guitar though) and I dunno if acoustic and electric strings differ in tension or anything that  might be important. Anyone got anything on that?

Cheers
