Surprise visit by an apparently rare Moth!
« on: August 10, 2013, 01:15:07 PM »
Today I went outside with my girl's camera (she was out and therefore couldn't stop me, muahaha!)

We don't have a Macro lens, so I chucked a long-ish distance zoom lens that she uses for sports photography (Roller Derby) on the camera, got the tripod, and went into our garden. Turns out a long-distance zoom was the best idea as the Butterflies tend to bugger off if I get too close.

Anyway, We planted a garden specifically to attract Bees and Butterflies, and generally make it a haven for pollinators and other desirable wildlife. I was hoping to attract Butterflies, but my main mission was to attract Garden Tiger Moths, because they are some of the most beautiful creatures we get in the UK, in my opinion.

So I saw a couple on our Buddleja, and I was chuffed to bits! Took some pics of them, posted them on Facebook.

One of my very knowledgeable friends posted this under one of my pics:
" Dude, you are very privileged, because this is not a garden tiger moth. It is the extremely rare Jersey Tiger Moth. However, it breeds in 2 locations in the UK (outside of the Channel Islands, hence the name) and they both happen to be within spitting distance of Exeter. When I lived there,, I saw several each year, but have never seen them further away from Exeter than Lympstone or Dunsford."

Needless to say, I'm over the moon!

excellent :D

We've been getting a load of butterflies and bees (planted lots of flowers too) but nothing as fancy as that. Even the pretty common butterflies are pretty nice, though, I've seen (I think) tortoiseshell, peac--k and cabbage whites so far.

EDIT: LOL at the censoring

Nice photo.  :D

I saw two butterflies today.  Which doesn't sound like a big deal, I know, but I hardly ever see them.  It must be the right time of year.
BKPs I've Got:  RR, BKP-91, ITs, VHII, CS set, Emeralds
BKPs I Had:  RY+Abraxas, Crawlers, BD+SM

If anyone's interested, here are some of the other pics I got:

The last one is the underside of the Tiger Moth.

Awesome. I love the photos of the Bees as well. Can't say the same about the wasps... I hate wasps! :?

No wasps here, thankfully. I hate wasps, too, if I'd seen any I would have squished them as they bully Bees and other valuable garden insects. The thing that looks like a wasp is a Hoverfly. Completely harmless and very much welcome around our garden. Great pollinators!  :)

Oops... should've realised that! :?
I semi-suspected that it might've been I hoverfly but I didn't think much off it, because I rarely see hoverflies around fowers but rather just buzzing around my head.

Yeah they do that to me a lot, too, hah!

They seem to prefer flowers with a smaller head and easier-to-reach pollen, like Daisys etc, but they're going mad for our Globe Thistle.  :D

nice :)

that butterfly in the middle is one of the ones i've been seeing around our garden, a peac--k i think?

to be fair, warmoth necks under the bed aren't the usually advised way of attracting them :D

So maybe they're appearing this year because I don't have as many Warmoth necks as I did last year...?

Just imagine what happens once you assemble all your guitars? An Invasion of killer WARmoths invading England!
