Acoustic and electric strings: How big is the difference?

Good day,
as I will very soon move to Sweden I have to think about how I get my strings in the future. Hopefully DR strings are readily available in Malmö, otherwhise I still have DŽaddario which I also like from the usual choice.

My main issue however is Yuna, my main acoustic guitar. She is currently strung with Newtone Nickel Master acoustic strings.

I do not suspect those will be too easy to get a hand on in Sweden so I was wondering what the actual difference between electric and acoustic strings is. I did a little search on the interwebs, but you are ususally more knowledgeable.

I know the alloys used for the wind are obviously different (often bronze in acoustic and nickel or steel in electric), but are there usually differences in things like wind technique or core strength or anything else that might indicate stringing my acoutic up with nickel electric strings might be a bad idea?

Can you not get them from Thomann? Dont they deliver all over Europe. It is the age of the interwebz, my friend.

Of course I could, also from shops like saitenkatalog, but if I could just get nickel electric strings from the local shop it would be easier and probably a lot cheaper (no shipping and Newtones are not really the cheapest to begin with)

Plus this is a general point of interrested for me, this specific thing is just the reason to ask this now.


Some things I will still get from online shops, some from germany, some from elsewhere. My BKPs will come from Feline most likely (got another one in mind, maybe after I arrived I will get the Dimarzios out of my 7 string) and my dried soy meat (and some other none cooled veggy things) will most likely still come from alles-vegetarisch.de

Btw, I take no offence as I am in a lot of ways still a analog guy (heck, how many people my age have vinyls and use them), but I am still a digital native in general. I am so young I am just starting at the university, studying English in Malmö (I am from Germany...yeah I know, strange combo maybe).
I do admit I am a combination of a nerd and your mother when you are trying to explain E-Mail to her, but still generally I am aware of the series of tubes you call the interwebs, which is also home to the blogosphere as I take it ;)

I can't give you any precise information other than I've tried it with poor results but no matter what anyone says I think it's worth trying it for yourself to see if the sound satisfies you.

Getting DR strings shouldn't be a problem in Malmö. I live in Gothenburg and there are a few shops that stock DR.

There are a few music stores in Malmö, I haven't been checking them out though. You will probably go quite often to Copenhagen as well though, it's a quick 30 minute trip with the commuting train.

Normally I buy my strings online from either Germany or the UK. It's much cheaper than paying the markup of the local shops which is huge on strings. Guitars can be had at good prices quite often, but stings are expensive....

Let me know if you pass through Gothenburg, I'll gladly take you on a tour!

The markup sounds bad, maybe bulk buying from Germany is the easier option in the end.

Really interrested in checking all the shops. Already had a look at blocket.se and I will keep that up. Already saw a modded 5150 for 7000 crowns (the mod alone costs about 4600, but I dunno if it is any good xD), which is interresting.

Do you speak German? That would make it easier learning wise, but Swedish is still a Germanic language so you'll benefit greatly by already speaking English. And basically the whole population here speaks English already so you'll have no problems anyway.

The 5150 might be cool but my cab can only handle 60W and for a new student it is still not peanuts^^

German I do speak having lived in Germany all my life (22 years after all). I obviously speak English too, also since that is what I will be studying. I do find Swedish to be very easy to learn. I can see the root of the words more in German and the grammar (which is horribly hard in German) more from English. Should not be too hard to learn all in all I recon.

Lundgrens might be cool if I need a MiniHB, but sides that I think I might stay a BKP guy (plus I also want a TVJones sometime).
The 5150 is actually Folkesson modded.



On the original topic: So one sees any potential issue with this sides them potentially sounding bad? My current nickel acoustics also sound different, but I like it, wonder if electric nickels sound the same =9
