ONE STEP BACK FROM AFTERMATH

Hi guys.

I'm currently planning to order one more Mayones Regius with Bare Knuckle. 7 String baritone this time .

Guitar would be Wenge based neck thru + swamp ash wings + ebony fretboard +  Evertune (This sucker makes sound thinner!)

I have 3 models of Bkps and love them all, but cannot decide what to choose this time. HELP!

TONE: Aggressive (but not too "pre EQ-ed"), focused, tight but open, clear, never muddy
Music: Well let say Modern Metal, Death metal. BUT NOT DJENT!!!
Tuning - from standard B to drop G one step down, nothing extreme for 27"

I understand that this all points to aftermath BUT I've played it bunch of times on Regius'es and I had always feeling that I want it to be just bit less "djenty" with more balls.

What could be very aggressive and tight on 7 string but just step back to "normal" organic tone?

BLACKHAWK? never heard them, so bit afraid.
I'm really don't know how this would sound in 7 string baritone.
(E.a. C-bomb - good PU for 6, but total cr@p in setius 7)

Nailbomb - Nope, heard on 25,5" maple n-thru Regius 7.  7 String not tight enough (alnico), and really this PU is great eq'ed for 6 string IMO 7
Cold sweat - Nope, have it on almost all mahogany Regius 6 custom and it is very bright and open even there. Great PU, Love to death, but want something more aggressive this time and simply different sound

Warpig - NOoooo. Have it on all maple neck thru jackson. Way too different from what i want. Not open and won't be really focused and tight.

I can only throw in one thing, which is the Black Dog. Thing is that baritone adds treble and bass and therefor a middy PU is kinda the go to. Therefore the BD is one of THE go to pubs for baritone.
From what I know it also does metal well, although I can not tell how well it does modern metal. I think I heard it does 7 string well too, but I donīt recall.
Certainly a nicely roary sound.

Just an idea that might be worth looking into.

The black hawk is brutal and tight and clear but organic.....maybe if you back off the volume a little yeah. If I were in a death metal band its what id use personally.

Kiichi, Never considered BD as option, could be a good idea. Just afraid about too much midrange on wenge neck. But it's not math, to be so sure)). Heard it once in LP, and it sounded pretty neat.

JimmyMoorby, In general I'll consider Black Hawk. I think you convinced me.

Mmmmm, the triple ceramic magnet design of the Aftermath suggests that the Painkiller might be similar but I'm not sure it could be described as 'a step back' given that it's at least as hot and uses a more modern wire. The most obvious option to me would actually be the alnico Nailbomb and I'm utterly amazed you didn't find it tight enough as it's the tightest and most aggressive pickup I've ever tried. Given that the Nailbomb is out, I'd be inclined to suggest either a Miracle Man (aggressive and tight but also surprisingly warm and organic) or the Black Hawk. The alnico Black Hawk would be more versatile and organic but the ceramic version would be more tight and aggressive.

I think the alnico nailbomb is plenty tight enough too but maybe its just not ideal for such low drop tunings? I dunno though as ill always play in e flat if I can.  If i tuned my guitar that low itd be to create carnage with no subtleties and for that as I said before the black hawk is an extremely hot pickup and the only way i could get 'organic' tones from it is by rolling the volume back which im not really into.  Its definitely what id use for death metal but your tastes might be different.  I know ive just reapeated pretty exactly what I put before but i just wanted to make it clear that at full volume with hi gain and compared to my nailbomb it aint 'organic' but it aint muddy....it just responds like an emg when pushed to the max but the tone is different.  I prefer the black hawk to emg for overdriven tones and not having to worry about batteries one thing the alnico black hawk does though is make your cleans darker and smoother sounding and im not sure i like that which is why I said id like to put it in a guitar specially for brutal riffs and solos etc it aint ideal for the george lynch super strat but it certainly turned it into a brutal guitar I dread to think what it would sound like in some thick ass mahogony guitar (Thats my next bit of gear im lusting after)

The holy diver in drop tunings is an interesting prospect though it has more hi mids than a nailbomb so that should tighten things up??

Yes, the Holydiver did cross my mind but if he doesn't find the Nailbomb tight enough, I seriously doubt he'll find a Holydiver tight enough. Another option might be the Rebel Yell but I'm still left wondering if he'll find it tight enough if the Nailbomb doesn't work. I'm left ignoring the tone he's after and just trying to think of pickups that are super tight and compared to a Nailbomb, that isn't a long list! Aftermath, Black Hawk and possibly Painkiller and that's about it for me.
