sennheiser e606 or e906?
« on: August 16, 2013, 02:29:05 AM »
I am wanting a new mic for recording electric guitars and wondered if you think the e906 is worth the extra cost over the e606?

I'm thinking that the e606 could be better simply because there would be less option, but I hear the e906 sounds slightly better.

Anyway I would love to know what you think especially if you are using them and what your experiences are of the mics.

I do only own the E906 and have read up on the 606 a bit while buying.

From what I figured the 906 is the better option cause it generally sounds a bit better to most ears and has the added three way switch.
Now you might be scared of that extra option, but donīt be. It really is very usefull I find.
I am speaking mostly from a live perspective here, as I used the mic mostly there, but I found a point where to place the mic which is so that the cage is just about all on the membrane and then I just need to use the switch to go between normal and boost, depending on the amp, to get a very usable sound in the location I usually work.

If you donīt wanne use that for recording, fair enough it is after all just another EQ, so you might leave it on the mid position 90% of the time, but then you still have a bit better sounding mic (there are comparison clips somewhere out there) and sometimes you can use a combination of the switch and positioning, which really is very easy, to get the best out of a odd sounding amp without too much trouble.

My 2 cents at least.

I like the 609. Never heard of the 606, actually.

In all likelihood, most (99.9999%) listeners will not be able to tell the difference, so I would not really get too hung up on the minute differences between model X and Y from any one manufacturer.

Having a pad on the mic is nice IF your preamp does not have one. Switchable polar patterns for recording electric guitar is pretty useless in my experience.

The 906 does not have a pad or pattern switch, its a a presence switch. Leaves alone, boosts or cuts with a mid frequency of 4k I think. I find it very helpful for fast setups I need to do live. In the studio it will have less use as you can fiddle as long as you want, but it can still speed things up.

If you are looking for a 4k boost, just go with the 609; it has an upper mid boost. If it's too much, you can just roll off 3.4-ish via EQ.

Live guitar is really what the 609 is for -- just sling it around the guitar cab and go.

thanks for the advice guys, I've settled on the e906, I think having the extra treble boost and cut is a good thing despite my original doubts, hopefully I'll get it next week at some point.

Great choice and you really can't go wrong with it!
