P90 guitar project - need some advice!
« on: August 21, 2013, 03:28:23 PM »
hey guys, I'm planning to start a P90 guitar project and I can't decide on which body/neck style to go trough... I don't plan to buy a finished guitar (like a fender for example), but to build one... would buy a finished one only if it is a very good deal...

The thing is, I don't want it to be a standard guitar (such as an SG, LP, Tele, etc)... I want something different (but not too weird) so any suggestions will be apreciated!

This axe is going to be a fixed bridge with BKP supermassives... I want to get those grunge/hard rock modern P90 tones that the supermassive seems to do well.. think of a mix between some Rage against the machine tones, soundgarden, mudhoney.... nothing vintage, really hard stuff and sometimes droped D tuning too.

As it is a peculiar tone, it deserves a peculiar guitar... so I'd like to know what come to your minds when thinking of a peculiar looking guitar shape...... Actually I plan to do an art paintjob on it, but not decided yet...

Looking foward to hear your ideas!

Cheers

you could try a tele-master

Maybe something like a Fender Musiclander, unless you are a large person (they are pretty small bodies)

BKPs I've Got:  RR, BKP-91, ITs, VHII, CS set, Emeralds
BKPs I Had:  RY+Abraxas, Crawlers, BD+SM

hot hot hot!

Philly is right about the body - I tried a boutique Japanese clone of one in Tokyo. I wanted it to work, but it was just too small (I am 6'2)!

Whereas I am 5'6", and I intend to build one (at some point)!   I don't really like the arrow headstock though, I think I'd probably use something more Stratlike.

Thanks for the answers.. I think the Musiclander isn't going to work, I'm 6'1 and have been a bit lazy lately, witha  few extra pounds  :P :P :P :P

I dug the tele-master though, I think it's something like that ... but I want bolt-on pups (no pickguard) and a different headstock maybe?? frankenmaster

This thing looks pretty cool, I don't know what it is but I found it when looking for Musiclander pictures.  It's like a more modern/futuristic take on the Telemaster:

Phlly this one is sexy!! Looks like a prototype or something... look at the carved Fender logo at the pickguard... sick... Even though I don't want a pickuguard, that particular one looks very cool indeed...

that body shape is apealing, I liked the arm contour too, looks confy... Maybe a different brdige style, strig-thru the body and a cool paintjob...

What about the headstock? I don't want the usual fender headstocks (either strat or tele)... they make the guitar look too sober for what I want... I like the Ibanez Talman headstock style...

A really ugly guitar with a freaking awesome tone... that's what I think I'm going to end up with

You could try something similar to Pig Champion's mutilated Iceman shape.

Not sure why he sawed off the horn.  Probably more comfortable to play without it.

I recently am really diggin the Yamaha SG shape, basecally the cool doublecut LP. That as a semi hollow would be so cool and amazing with P90s imho.

Now of course the others are a matter of taste (the iceman variant has something to it, though not something I´d play), but the other two really are not my type, so much so that I would prefer this to them I am sorry to say (this is of course very personal. I even donßt like the jazzmaster style, although it works when certain people play it).

Anyhow, something I came across:

Oh and about weird shapes looky here:http://www.google.de/imgres?start=178&um=1&client=firefox-a&sa=N&rls=org.mozilla:de:official&channel=fflb&hl=en&biw=1920&bih=914&tbm=isch&tbnid=6HDrFgk5zgTFWM:&imgrefurl=http://www.guitarforum.co.za/guitar-gear/contraceptives-gfsa-style/&docid=ZGWnQBOC0rADFM&imgurl=http://www.jerrock.com/66/system/files/Image/Guitare/Gibson/Gibson_guitares_general/Gibson_Moderne_reissu_1982_naturel_big.png&w=800&h=350&ei=yzAVUrSQD4WThQfz-YGgCg&zoom=1&iact=hc&vpx=4&vpy=478&dur=2406&hovh=148&hovw=340&tx=153&ty=171&page=4&tbnh=145&tbnw=290&ndsp=61&ved=1t:429,r:78,s:100,i:238
That is some strange stuff there.

Guess I am a tradiationalist in a way. =)

Kiichi the "c--kcaster" isn't my type of guitar      Elton John would love it though if he was a guitar player.. I knew someone would throw this arround, but I was expecting to be Eric Hellstyle....

Telerocker, I'm looking after the explorers too, actually I'm trying to blend the explorer and the telemaster.... I dug the telemaster shape but didn't like the tele neck on it... the hard part will be to find someone to build that axe when I finally decide

Thanks for all the insights
