NCD - Zilla Superfatboy
« on: September 10, 2013, 01:19:27 PM »
Hey guys, finally got to down-size my cab situation. Previously I had a Blackstar Artisan 4X12 which was fantastic, but it truly was a back breaker. So when I saw that Zilla were cutting some prices off some ex-demo cabs i jumped on it. So last weekend I finally got to head down Zilla HQ to meet up with Paul to collect my cab. Hes a great guy and a pleasure to work with btw. Anyhow for an 'ex-demo' cab its in phenomenal condition, cant see ANY flaws, he installed some new V30s in there for me, i tried it out through his Diezel VH4 and it sounded verrrrrry chunky. I can now finally play my amp at home without having to move a 4x12 around and i have a fantastic one size fits all cab-recording, gigging, practicing-cant wait to crank it!! so far at the low volumes ive been playing it sounds huge and really focused. Some pics:

How's the JSX at low volumes?  My 6534+ sounds very different at low volume, full of the fizzies.  I had it up to 1.5 today on the lead channel post volume but that was in the middle of the day and neither of the neighbours was home (and we have 1/4 acre + blocks of land). Sounded a LOT better.  These Peavey tube amps are really designed to be cranked.  I'm kind of wishing I had a better practice amp, something between the Peavey and the Roland Cube 30X I currently have.

The JSX isnt too bad, its a bit of a 'quiet' amp for 120w anyways so i can get it sounding decent without killing any humans in the process; the other peavey amps (5150 range) are renowned for being quite fizzy until you really open them up; the JSX doesnt have that fizziness at low volumes; but yes it does make me wonder about going to a 50w sometimes :-)

Looks nice! Classy and big, but not flashy.
Congrats!
Would love to have one of those, though not with V30s, personally not that big on them.

Congrats on the Superfatboy. Great cab. I got an ex-demo model myself and it didn't have any wear just like yours. Unfortunately I haven't played it live yet as I really don't do any gigs. The last years I have only played with some collegues of mine and I have been playing through a Laney VC15 which belongs to the High School where I work. But next time we do a little gig I ought to bring my amp and the Zilla cab.

Cheers guys-yes I like the fact that the look is kinda vintage and understated; the Artisan cab i had before had a vintage look also so it was nice to go with something roughly in the same vein. I had the option of going for a basketweave grill but i thought the 'salt and pepper' effect looks better on it. It also goes really well with the JSX looks-wise!

MrAir-yes cant wait to crank it properly at a practice/gig; will be interesting to see how it competes against the other guitarists Mode Four Marshall 4x12...

Let us hear how the Zilla performs once you've cranked the amp at a practice/gig  :)

Congrats, gotta love Zilla  :D

How does it compare to your 4*12 sound and loudness wise?

Nice score! I'm fancying another one at some point in the near future (I want a super to stack on top of my standard fatboy). I feeling either white, or camo to contrast the black. It complements my Diezel awesomely too.
