Pickups for ash body with neck-through maple neck
« on: September 12, 2013, 02:29:19 PM »
Howdy!
At last I came to decision to get a pair of BKPs, but they're hard to get here where I live.
What we have here is a hardtail MIJ Grover Jackson with maple neck through ash body (never knew if it's white or, what is more likely, swamp). I play mostly death/black/thrash etc. The questions are:
1. Wouldn't be a Painkiller too bright for ash/maple?
2. What about alnico Warpig? Its tone chart seem to be close to one of SD Invader's which I used to play (but, to be honest, I got tired of its lack of highs).
3. Your own suggestions?

Seems too bright as for me, which allegedly is not very good for my setup.

It would depend on whether you are talking highs or mids that are bright.  The Miracle Man is quite scooped, and has worked in guitars with a lot of bright mids.

But I would strongly recommend contacting BKP for a recommendation, and anyway I'd like to know what they would recommend so please get back to us.

I would go with that then, I'm happy with my Warpigs, but think about coil-splitting to take advantage of that big output and maybe to help with a lower output for clean playing if you need it.  The Warpigs really drive a tube amp, especially high-gain amps.

That's just excellent. I was inclined to get an A-Pig initially, now my opinion is approved by authorities, so to speak :D
And my thanks and praises to Agent Orange, I would never guess contacting BKP directly, here in Belarus we can only dream of such a high level of support, like, you get an answer the same day you send your e-mail.

Here's one more, I don't need coil splitting etc, then I'm getting a two wires version, I suppose? No tricks here?

If you donīt need or want vintage correct wires I would still go for the 4 conductor. There is no downside to it and you keep options for split, phase and series parellel still open should you change your mind.
Especially on the WP a split is really something to never count out imho.

Plus there are also things like the Petrucci style wiring automatically splitting both HBs in the middle position, which I for one like a lot more as it sounds good, adds versatility and keeps things just as simple in effective use.

So why rob yourself of the option to change your mind or try it later?
BKPs in use: 10th set / RY set / Holy Diver b, Emerald n / Crawler bridge, Slowhand mid MQ neck/ Manhattan n
On the sidelines: Stockholm b / Suppermassive n, Mule n, AM set, IT mid

I agree.  There is absolutely no reason to take the two conductor option.

Also, if you ever decide to sell them or trade them then the four conductor option is what everyone is looking for.  Personally if someone offered me a set of two-conductor pickups I would either not buy them or expect $50 off the price.

If you don't use the extra wires they just sit there taped together being very quiet.
