NPD - VHII and '63 Veneer Boards with 280k Pots
« on: September 16, 2013, 09:10:17 PM »
After having a conversation on Facebook with Tim about a dilemma I was having, we finally decided on a VHII in the bridge with '63 Veneer Boards in the middle/neck.

The dilemma was that having an Ibanez SA160FM (Mahogany Body, Maple Neck, Rosewood Fingerboard), I was unsure as to what single coils to go for. Especially that it is currently 500k pots.

Tim told me that he prefers 280k pots for HSS guitars, and that he uses a Holy Diver and '63 Veneer boards in one of his Strats. Mine being a Mahogany body, he said the Abraxas would be better suited. But he then said that the VHII would fit my description prefectly.

I was worried at first that the VHII would be too bright, but he assured me the VHII has a nice full bottom end, and the mahogany with 280k pots would work well with the top end.

My initial description of what I wanted was:

A bridge pickup that is fat, vocal, but cuts well, suited to crunchy chords and vocal leads (I was thinking Crawler or Abraxas at the time). I like to control the saturation with the volume control;

For the single coils, something that provides exquisite, sparkly cleans - not harsh I might add (this is were the 500k pots had stumped me), but also works well with tone control so I can warm things up to play jazz.

I'll get pictures up as soon as they arrive, as well as many, many clips to come forward playing as many styles as possible.

Glad you like them. I have a VHII/Mother's Milk loaded ash/rosewood board strat and your description is quite accurate.

I only ordered them last night, so now comes the highly anticipated wait. I'll get some pics up as soon as they arrive, and then when they're in my guitar. I plan to do a bucket load of clips though, so hopefully it can help other people decide on a set.

I have to admit I've been researching BKPs for the last couple months and never thought I'd go with what I've picked. It just goes to show. I also think what I've got isn't exactly popular as well, so I hope it can prove to be another get to go combo like the Holy Diver/Emerald.

As I said, plenty of clips to come playing all different styles. Lets just hope I like them now lol

No I wrote what my initial description of what I wanted. As well as putting at the bottom I'll make a review when they arrive. Now I need to see if it matches my description, hopefully ha.

I think you're gonna be fine. It's an excellent combo. I still want try the 63 Veneer Boards, but I guess they're quite close to Mother's Milk.

I've read a few threads were Nolly has talked about the differences: saying he probably wouldn't notice straight away if someone switched them without him knowing. I'm just interested in how they'll suit a Mahogany body. Well I'll provide plenty of examples into how they respond. :)

The differences between the 59 Slabboard, 63 Veneer Board and the Mother's Milk are subtle. They all have the glassiness and woodiness of a vintagestratpickup, just the voicing is a little different.
Well surprise us with those '63's.

I'm actually really curious and hope to be surprised myself. Never used low output pickups before. Just a shame it's going to be a few weeks before I get to play them as my Tech has a back log so going to have to wait :(
