Replacements for my Les Paul
« on: September 17, 2013, 04:04:31 PM »
I just bought one of those new Gibson Les Paul Traditional Pro 2 s from Guitar Guitar. Mines a great example, but the pickups seem lacking in low end and a little scratchy. They are a 57 Classic and a Super 57 in the bridge, which looks quite cheaply made to me.

My brothers 2001 Les Paul has 490R/498T s in, which I sort of preferred, and I'd like something warm and Classc Rock but with enough cut.

I was thinking Holy Divers for some reason, thoughts please?

The HD could be nice, but if you are thinking that direction and want classic rock with enough cut I might rather go Blackdog though. Similar to the HD but more PAF character.

Depending on how the LP sounds though it might get too middy.

There also is always the Rebell Yell, a PU just made for LPs. Modern voice with a great vintage throwback in there, punchy bottom, focus on incredibly rocky and organicly agressive high mids and a treble that cuts but is not piercing or harsh.
The way its bottom end works just is perfect for LPs.
Can go from great natural classic rock with a modern cut to modern metal no issue.
BKPs in use: 10th set / RY set / Holy Diver b, Emerald n / Crawler bridge, Slowhand mid MQ neck/ Manhattan n
On the sidelines: Stockholm b / Suppermassive n, Mule n, AM set, IT mid

I don't blame you for hating the 490R/498T set, I had these myself in an SG and replaced them quickly, but maybe try adjusting the pickup heights and even the pole pieces first before changing pickups.  If you still hate them after that, or maybe just hate the 498T (some people love the 490R neck and keep it, but personally I preferred the 498T to the 490R so I changed both) you might want to consider several pickups out of the 'vintage' and 'vintage hot' ranges of BKPs and the Rebel Yell, Cold Sweat, and Holy Diver sets from the contemporary range.  There are a heap of reviews of each of these in a special stickied review page at the top of this forum, and many of them specifically in Les Pauls.

Each of the contemporary sets just mentioned aren't that 'contemporary' - they are actually variations on sounds you could find in pickups in the '80s.  For example the Cold Sweat is based on the John Sykes sound on 'Thunder and Lightning' and 'Whitesnake', while the Rebel Yell is obviously based on Steve Stevens's sound on the classic '80s Billy Idol stuff.  No prizes for guessing what sound the Holy Diver attempts to capture! Anyway all of them are tried and tested in Les Pauls and out of those it should be the clips and applications that form your guide.  But check out vintage hot sets like the Emerald too.  If you like the hotter sound of the 498T but want more 'balls' for rock stuff these are probably your best options. Some of the other hot contemporary ones are specifically metal or hardcore pickups.

Warm and classic rock: Mules, Black Dog or Abraxas.
A bit more bite, but still good mids: RiffRaff's.
These are very versatile PAF-ish pickups
Mules, VHII, Crawler, MM's, IT's, BG50's.
