Has anyone heard of Harrison Custom Guitars?
« on: September 19, 2013, 11:49:23 PM »
Been looking at many luthiers lately and came across Harrison Guitars. They make a fantastic looking Les Paul clone. Just wondered if anyone has heard anything about them?

Here's a couple pics of the craftmanship:

Don't know the brand. Just checked out the website and it seems these are handmade guitars fromh high quality timbers. In the section testimonials I stumble upon Peter Green, for what's it worth. Didn't see any priceindication. I can't find info on fora about Harrison.

That's why I'm having a look around, but can't seem to find much info. I've sent them an email just to enquire. Been researching a good few months now and come across loads of candidates. It's just that Les Paul replica that has me awestruck as it's a beautiful piece. Will just have to see what the future holds.

Good looking stuff but that doesn't mean a lot. I've played a ton of good looking LPs but only one that made me go 'WoW'. Be interested to hear about prices. If you commission a custom guitar I hear that you generally pay something up front and the balance on completion. What happens if you don't like it ?

Well I've had a good chat with Guy Harrison, and he's offered me to come to the workshop to discuss things, as well as show me the workshop and the wood he has in stock. Basically showing me how he chooses the wood and what works best for what he's trying to achieve. He seems pretty knowledgeable so I look forward to meeting him. I had a good few emails with him and he's happy to spend time on trying to achieve what works for me, rather than just ask for a spec and say "Ok, here, it's built!". He's also about an hours drive away so that works good as well.

He's charging around £3,500 average for a Les Paul build with highly detailed figured tops, and fingerboards made out of woods such as Brazilian Rosewood. It's going to be quite an in-depth build, so I'm happy to go ahead with him as I have a good idea what I want, but he's flexible to consider options and to provide his own input. I look forward to working with him.

I won't be able to afford the build until next March, but I'm going to pay a deposit after the initial meeting if we decide we're both happy. Then it should be done 5/6 months later, so looking around September 2014. I'll be getting BKPs installed, so I should hopefully provide a decent thread of the condsruction from timbers to final.

Oh boy, hefty pricetag. Could be worth the money, but I'm afraid you have to calculate in a loss when you want to sell that guitar. A Gibson Customshop holds it value better.

I'm telling myself that everytime when I buy new gear, but sooner or later some of the babies had to leave the house to make place for new ones.

Well I guess that's why I'm doing my research now. If in a couple months time I decide against a Les Paul, at least I can happy in the knowledge I didn't rush into it. That's another reason I wanted to wait until March. I could even end up getting a stock guitar. We'll jsut have to see.

At the present time, I'm just building up a portfolio of ideas, etc.

Hey Cam, how did you get on with the Harrison guitar.

I have a couple of custom builds from Matt Artinger in the US, they are the most amazing guitars and people saying stick with the likes of Gibson and PRS clearly don't understand what a custom build is about.  You simply get a guitar exactly as you want it right down to the neck shape, exact pieces of wood, and even the weight.   The guy who talks about resale value, what is he talking about, you don't sell these when you get them because they're exactly what you want.  How many Martyn Booth, Rob Williams or Chris George guitars do you see second hand, none because nobody sells them, there's no reason to sell something that's perfect for you.

I'm just about to commission a Suhr Modern Satin analogue and have been wrestling whether to go with Rob Williams or Guy Harrison, but I think it will be Guy because I just like the whole individual bespoke thing.  Very difficult decision though because Rob's guitars are sooooo good.  Any feedback on Guy's work would really help me, or at least help confirm I'm going in the right direction
