Ibanez HSH 5 way switch wiring for BKP humbuckers - help
« on: September 25, 2013, 02:49:27 PM »
Hi, I've never tried switching pickups before and after being on the fence for a while, then seeing the new juggernaut set I think I'd probably like to switch out my stock pickups in my ibanez 870 QMZ.
If anybody is feeling helpful enough there are a few things I'm not really too sure about when it comes to changing pickups in an ibanez.

First of all I've found a wiring diagram from the ibanez website that shows the circuit in my guitar, although it wasn't listed under the model I own ( I couldn't find a wiring diagram for my exact model ).
However while looking up how bare knuckle wire colours correspond to the ibanez colours I was left a bit confused, I would want to get the 4 conductor pickups (in case I wanted to do any fancy wiring in the future but for now only want series operation as it currently operates) however I'm not exactly sure where to put these wires in correspondence to the ibanez wiring diagram. Could anybody clear up how the bare knuckle wire colours relate to ibanez's?

Also I've seen on other forum posts that the neck pickup may need its magnet reversed for correct operation within the ibanez circuit and that I would need a short leg baseplate (which there doesn't seem to be an option for, which may be due to some reason that I currently am ignorant of). Would this be neccessary for my guitar?

Any help from people more experienced than me (which would generally be most people) would be much appreciated  :D

You only need reverse one of the pickups magnets with an HH ibanez with a 5 way. It is thankfully not needed with an HSH.

I think you will find that the ibanez pickups may look like they have 3 conductors which really confused me at first. The coil tap wire is essentially two that you might solder together.

I have done both HH and HSH with 5 way ibanez switches recently.  It was in fact very straightforward - just solder the Green & White wires together at the same tab on the switch with the HSH

Here it is described with Seymour Duncan colour coding.
