Colorsound Powerboost
« on: October 11, 2013, 03:23:49 PM »
Hello mates! As most of you are in the UK, I wonder if anybody here have or had this stomp. I'm after one or a faithfull clone with those huge resistors/caps and the right transistors, but it's so hard to find.. the clones in most times have some changes that affect the sound, and the originals cost a small fortune for me (the exchange of the brazilian real x UK pound is 3,7/1).

If you guys can point me after a nice clone of it, I'll be glad. Thanks guys!

Get intouch with Juansolo, he makes a clone of the overdriver which is practically the same unit. It is superb and easily the best overdrive I've used. Out of all my pedals it's the only one that is always plugged in. Super transparant.

Check this one out too http://www.throbak.com/2013/01/throbak-effect-pedals.html

Yeah, the Cherrybomb is part COD and part CPB. Though IIRC the Power Boost runs 18v. We tried it and couldn't tell the difference so didn't bother charge pumping it. Nothing stopping you putting a 18v supply into it though if you wanted. I'm pretty sure everything in there is rated above that.

I rebuilt this one with some old correct transistors, axial caps and carbon comp resistors to see what difference it made (not much), but it's a mess inside as it's been soldered and unsoldered a couple of times.

I *think* we might have a set of the original transistors left to build another... I'll have a look:

Saying that, I could always drop the innards of that one into a new box and build myself another if I haven't.

Righty, the originals have metal film resistors rather than carbon comp and despite not having any of the original trannies left, they're available (and expensive). Can match up what caps they put in them also (well apart from the fishes).

So in all, it's doable. But I'm not convinced it's worth it sonically to go that far with the repro. Indeed, they still make them if you want to go that far.
