Need H-H-P90 recommendations
« on: October 12, 2013, 03:48:35 AM »
Hi everyone, I need some help. I'm getting a custom built and I need to decide which BKPs to put in it. It's going to be based off of an explorer, with a sapele body, a maple neck-through, and a maple fingerboard. The best part is its going to have 3 pickups, humbuckers in a bridge and middle and a P90 in the neck. I play mostly power metal and similar genres, but versatility is definitely a factor. I usually play through either my Framus Cobra or Mes Dual Rec. I've been looking a lot at the Holy Divers, Black Dogs, and the Nantucket 90. If anyone has any thoughts, I'd really appreciate some feedback, Thanks!  :D

Well the Mississippi Queen is basically the humbucker-sized version of the Nantucket, so in an Explorer I would be looking at the MQ.  It would probably go well with the Black Dog.  It probably goes well with most of the humbuckers - I've seen people writing that they combined it with a Warpig.

Thanks! Good to know that the Nantuckets/MQs go well with eveything, no I just need to decide on the humbuckers. I'm also actually going to go with the classic sized P90 for aesthetic reasons, I did a sketch of it in Illustrator and I really dig the look.

I don't know if they go well with everything, but you are probably safe for the options you mentioned.   For some pickup combinations you would probably be better off with the Supermassive neck, depending on the application.

I guess it would have been more accurate to say that they would go well with the options I'm considering

Your amps have enough gain, so you could go the vintageroute: Black Dog, MQ + MQ or a Mule in the middle.
Or you go the modern route: Holy Diver, MQ, MQ or Supermassive (more output, darker than MQ). You might choose a hb for the middleposition too. Maybe also a HD.
My recommendations are based on timbers and amps too. Choice is a matter of taste.
Mules, VHII, Crawler, MM's, IT's, BG50's.

Personally, I think the combination you've come up with sounds fine. The Holydiver is an awesome bridge pickup and the Black Dog will sit very nicely with it because it has some similar characteristics.
BKP owned:

Bridge - Emerald; Cold Sweat; Crawler; A-Bomb; Holydiver; Miracle Man; Sinner; Trilogy Suite

Neck - Emerald; Cold Sweat; Crawler; Holydiver; Sinner; Trilogy Suite
