Need a H-H recommendation
« on: October 12, 2013, 01:50:07 PM »
Hey guys,

I have a Carvin DC600:
- alder body
- maple neck through
- ebony fretboard

The guitar is equipped with the stock carvin C22 pickups - which I like for their clarity.
The problem I have is that they are too fizzy / trebly and lack something meaty (e.g. "baaaalls" -> low mids).

The guitar is currently on standard tuning but will be used dropped and maybe tuned down a whole step or 1 1/2. So the tone I search ranges from hardrock to metalcore to maybe even some djentier stuff.

Thanks for you help :)

Mmmmm, wouldn't be me. I tried a Nailbomb in a maple neck-thru with alder wings and a rosewood fretboard and there were way too many high mids. It was very aggressive and hairy sounding. The Miracle Man is perfect for maple neck-thru guitars as it's scooped in the high mids where the maple in the guitar is producing them anyway. The highs are screaming and the combination of low mids and lows gives it a really huge sound. It's also tight enough to cope with lower tunings. Nice and thick, smooth tone which is surprisingly organic for a ceramic pickup. I can't think of a better pickup than this for what you're after in that type of guitar. Once I sent the Nailbomb back I moved to a Holydiver, which was fantastic and then I put the Miracle Man in and it was even better. Awesome. A calibrated set would be a good choice as I've heard some great things about the Miracle Man neck.

I'd consider the alnico black hawk, alnico nail bomb and warpig.

The mircacle man ticks the boxes for lo mids and its a decent pickup but it doesnt knock my sock off though like some of the others.  Very popular in general though

I think it just depends on how 'hairy' you want it.

Full bush: alnico
Brazilian: ceramic

COBRA-T
WAR PIGS
STOCKHOLM
COLD SWEATS
MIRACLE MAN

Hey guys!

Thanks for your replies and sorry for getting back with such a delay - I'm on tour right now.
Regarding the alnico Black Hawk - my fear would be that it has not enough bass / might be too trebly, what do you think?

Any opinions on the Holy Diver and maybe the warpig?

Thanks!

EDIT: And what about the new Juggernaut!? :D

The black hawk isnt too bright or harsh and id say it has a good amount of bass and has as much bottom end as the alnico nailbomb maybe more but it just sounds monsterous like a wall of sound because all the frequencies are pushed to the max in a good way like actives. Itsdifferent to an emg 81 i guess a little fuller.  If you need more bottom than either of those youre looking at the warpig.

The Diver has huge mids and a rounded topend, but from what I've read here on the forum less bass than the Nailbomb. NB has more agression in the uppermids. The Dive for sure will perform very well in alder. Don't know much about the Warpig, only that it is quite bassheavy.

Speaking from personal experience, the Holydiver works well, though it doesn't have a particularly prominent bottom end. The Holydiver is all about bids and to me, they're fairly evenly spread so it cuts through a mix well and doesn't make too much of the upper mids that will be in your guitar naturally. Although I liked the Holydiver in my maple neck-thru, I felt that the Miracle Man was a better match. It has enough bottom end but it also plenty of low mids so it really does sound huge. The 'scoop' that you see on the EQ chart is in the upper mids and that's why it works so well in a maple neck-thru guitar where upper mids are plentiful. Highs are thick, smooth and fluid. It actually has quite a lot in common with the Holydiver in that regard. I've also read some good reports of a Warpig in a maple neck-thru but this is a pickup with a lot of bass so I think you'd have to really be after the particular sound it would produce.
