vhii's or mules?
« on: October 12, 2013, 09:48:40 PM »
I'm looking to get a kramer super strat with a mahogony body and a bolt on maple neck and fret board.

I really need a guitar that can do every thing from pop to classic rock/aor and metal ballads and metal but forget about jazz or country.

I have my heart set on a set of vhii's or mules.  I dont own either but have dabbled with both and fell in love with both but I still need some informed opinions please.

I have reservations about the mule in a bolt on super strat and it being too thin sounding.  What do you guys think?

I also cant remember how good the cleans were the vhii.  I think im leaning towards the vhii for overdrive sounds but I just cant remember how good the cleans were.

Splitting or single coil type sounds arent an issue as I also have a good strat.

I have an orange rockerverb amp if this helps.

Cheers

Out of those: VHII. I have one in an ash strat. Great rockpickup, cleans up well, good bass and mids, present topend without being shrill.
Mules, VHII, Crawler, MM's, IT's, BG50's.

Are the cleans really good too though?

Yes they are, for a bridgepickup. I like my cleans from singlecoils or the neckpickup. But the VHII has a very nice chime with the volumepot rolled down.

Awesome good to know as im biased towards the vhii as im a proper eddie van halen fanboy but if the cleans are very good then thats important.

If it had to be one of those two, I'd go VHII as well but given a free choice I'd choose neither of them. It's a big range of styles you're after and for me, that strongly suggests an Abraxas.
BKP owned:

Bridge - Emerald; Cold Sweat; Crawler; A-Bomb; Holydiver; Miracle Man; Sinner; Trilogy Suite

Neck - Emerald; Cold Sweat; Crawler; Holydiver; Sinner; Trilogy Suite

I've tried the abraxas and thought it was good. In the hands of some one else I wouldnt say it was better or worse than either of the above but based on when I played on a set I just found that on first impressions other pickups seemed to click into place more easily with what I was doing.

I find this quite often. I can hear some one else playing a guitar or amp and think it sounds good but then I play it and have a completely different experience.  I guess playing in your own style you notice your own quirks and gear can help you a little or work against you.

I think tone is in the fingers but its important to pick the right tools. I always try and make it easier for my self!

I have a Rockerverb too (50 watt head) and can tell you the VHII has the guts, tightness and a certain agression for metal-stuff too. Classic rock/aor is no problem at all.

Both pick ups do the EVH thing well, but I would go for the VHII´s. I also have one in my Baretta Reissue (Maple Body) and I think its sounds great!

I don't think I would be able to resist a VHII if I had a Kramer.

yeah the vhii was the first pickup i thought about getting. was going to put a set or a vhii with another good neck in my es 335. still a possibility. i'm so used to solidbody guitars that i'm not sure what sort of pickup the 335 needs because it sounds completely different then everything else i have. could use mules, or stormys, no clue. but the vhii would be fun in any guitar of mine i'd think
