I'm not very fond of these people as I find some items listred as misleading for example http://www.maverick-music.com/scripts/vintage-guitars.asp?idproduct=1201

When they say model they actually mean scale model.

There where also a couple of other Ex Gary Moore guitars there, but they only appear to have a Charlie Chandler model now.

Looks to me like Mr Moore must have been having some cash flow issues.

Theres also an ex Paul Kossoff & an ex Van Halen too, though the most interesting ones to me are the Eggles and the Rickenbacker acoustic.

I read an interview with Gary Moore about the sale of this guitar and it was VERY interesting! He didn't say why he sold it, but he did say it was supposed to be a discrete sale. There was a bit of bidding and Carlos Santana was also interested in it. It then got sold to the Maverick Music guy and all info should have been kept private. The guy then flashed the story all over the web and guitar press and now everyone knows about it. Gary Moore was WELL p*ssed off about the whole thing. There were a fair few "f" words in the interview and he was attacking the Maverick Music guy pretty heavily! He was not a happy bunny!

I dread to think what Gary Moore now feels about this sale so soon after the last one. He probably wanted it to go to someone who would really appreciate it for what it is, now it's going to end up in a bank vault and owned by a non-guitar playing city trader or something :(

I can't see why people spend 2 million on such things only to shut them away. If theyre not being played in the home (or studio) they should at least be on display.

I guess I like the Paul Allen attitude when he bought the Hendrix stuff.

That doesn't look like the GM/PG Les Paul to me... I thought it was heritage cherry...

Maybe he can pass it off to someone else to continue the legacy...

BTW, that guitar was totally wrecked about 10 years ago when a lorry smash the boot of the car in which Gary was taking the guitar to a studio.... the neck was broken in many places and was repaired but they don't mention that much..... the whole story was published at Guitarrist mag... let me see if I can find the article.....

Yep - the guitar is pretty much knackered. It's the historical value you're paying for.

It's WAAAAAAY overpriced if you ask me, but then I'm not a big PG fan.

IIRC, the Guitarist article was around 10 years ago. The actual crash & neck breakage was much longer ago.

I heard/read that the initial repair was done by Neville Martin but he used the wrong glue & made a pig's ear of it. Someone else re-did it....

did you mean Neville Marten? THe guy at guitarrist mag? :roll:

THe article was publised in April 95 so it's about 11 years old and it reads: "the guitar had a close brush with mortality a few years ago" So I guess the accident happened around 1991 or 1992....

I'm a big GM & PM fan. The famed LP is a piece of R&R history, it was a guitar that only needed the proper amp and player to make great sound. However, as it has been mentioned already; Clapton's Blackie had its day and now the GM/PG LP has had its day too. It was a great run though.

Actually, I think it is the same Neville Marten who edited Guitarist for a few years. He worked at Gibson for a time.

Yes, I remember reading that article when it was published in '95 which is why I commented that it must have been >10 years ago.

IMO "a few years ago" in that context could mean anything from 2-3 to 10+

Regarding the Peter Green/Gary Moore to the best of my knowledge Gary Moore wanted to sell the guitar as it had become a bit of a liability. The insurance premiums for the guitar were getting daft, and touring with it was impossible. As aluded in a previous post, Gary wanted a dicreet sale to a collector who didn't want to make a profit from the guitar but wanted it for their collection. A sum not unadjacent to £300,000 was mentioned. Once Gary sold the guitar it was very rapidly sold on for a rumoured $1,200,000, which is how it ended up at Maverick music, although whether they bought it outright or it was a consignment sale I don't know.

One of the reasons that the guitar has fetched so much money is that the provenance of the guitar is not in dispute: a major issue with many instruments.

Hopefully this will clear up a few issues.

Interesting stuff!

From what I've read about the sale, it was originally destined for a collector of some sort (Carlos Santana was a possible buyer at one point!) and Maverick Music were the go-betweens when a deal was eventually struck. Somehow the intended buyer dropped out (or was never there?) and the Maverick Music boss bought it. This fact was not clearly communicated and Gary Moore's side of the deal weren't aware of this when the sale went through.

The guitar then was posted on Maverick's site and it snowballed from there. I understand it's left a very sour taste in Gary's mouth and he's pretty naffed off about it.

I believe that there are a lot of people who have had issues with Maverick music.

Including John Hall (the CEO of Rickenbacker), I have been told has apparently had a few quite serious disputes with them.
