looking for a good cab to match this setup
« on: November 03, 2013, 02:46:20 PM »
basically right now i have a mesa boogie dual rectifier roadster with an Orange 2x12. i plan to get a new head (thinking a peavey 6505 or 5150) when i can get the money as a back up head, but also as something i can maybe setup an ABY pedal for. but i'm assuming it wouldnt be a good idea to run both amps through that one cab. unless you guys think otherwise? but if not, i'm thinking of grabbing a used 2x12 of another brand to pair with it. i was thinking a mesa rectifier cab but that will have the same speakers (vintage 30s) as my orange and id like to get something that would blend well with the v30s i have but still sound good with either the mesa or the possible peavey. thoughts?

Check out Zilla Cabs. A fatboy or super fatboy would probably suit your needs.

Avatar cabs are great, and very reasonably priced. If you want to run 2 heads with 1 cab, you don't need an ABY, you need the Radial Headbone (VT?) amp swicher.

yeah i think i've decided on the avatar mainly because zilla seems to just be europe which i understand but avatar has an awesome selection too. i just have to ask them maybe what will pair good with some v30s. your idea sounds cool too but i'd love to be able to  get both sounds blended

It is a great thing! I use an ABY with 2 heads and cabs; it really opens up the tonal possibilities. The Radial X Bones ABY is great because it has a phase switch which comes in very handy as not every amp's output is in the same phase. It also has a drag control.

Roadkill cabs are excellent very affordable and ship world wide.

You could also run two heads into one stereo cab. I do this myself.

Speaking of Roadkill they have a competition to win a cab coming up once they get to 300 likes on facebook so you may want to keep an eye on that

I have a 4x12 rated at 240W.

The general rule of thumb with these Peaveys seems to be twice as much power handling in the cab as the amp is rated at (i.e., 120W amp into a 240W cab).  I can't remember the reasoning behind this but most people seem to be very wary of the 120W cab for a 120W head idea.

Make sure you have enough power handling capability.

I'm not sure if two 120W 212s still only allows each cab to handle 120W, or if the load is divided between the speakers so that together they can handle 240W.  Regardless, even if the latter were the case, the total would be determined by the lowest rated cab.  For example 120W & 100W cabs in parallel would give you 200W if my hunch is correct, not 240W. If on the other hand you only get the capability of the lowest cab you would only have 100W before the smaller cab blows

If you mix speakers in a cab apparently the power handling is the rating of the lowest-rated speaker multiplied by the number of speakers.  However I have seen speaker cabinet manufacturers make the mistake of rating a mixed cab by adding them together (e.g., rating a cab with two 60W speakers and two 75W speakers as 270W when it is actually 240W).  This makes sense if you remember that there isn't a little man inside your cab sending more watts to one speaker than another.  The load is always divided by the number of speakers so if you pump 270W into that cabinet which is really 240W two of the speakers will fail.  Does that make sense?

Anyway maybe someone can clarify this.  Worth being clear about it before damaging expensive stuff

you can run a 120w amp into a 120w cab with no problems.

The amp wont be putting out 120w until you are running it louder than is practical for most situations.

However saying that a 'safety net' is always a good thing.

Or a dual mono cab, which is how I wired my Rivera 4x12. One pair is two Wizards, the other pair is Swamp Thangs. You get very interesting interactions from using different amps into a single cab.

Oh, why?  Everybody should experience at least one hernia in their lifetime.

My 4x12 is 50kg, with no wheels!  :?
